(Verse 1) Now the serpent was craftier than any beast of the field He turned to the woman, his intentions concealed "Has God said you shall not eat of every tree?" The woman replied, "We eat, but one is not for me." "For in the day that we eat, we surely shall die," The serpent whispered softly, "You will not tell a lie." (Chorus) "Your eyes will be opened, like God you will know The good and the evil, the way that things go" The fruit looked so pleasant, a delight to the sight She took of the harvest, and took a small bite She gave to her husband, who stood by her side And the innocence vanished, with nowhere to hide. (Verse 2) Then the eyes of them both were opened so wide They saw they were naked, with nowhere to hide They sewed up some fig leaves to cover their shame And hid in the garden, at the sound of His name The Lord called out, "Adam, where are you today?" "I heard You," he answered, "but I turned away." (Bridge) The blame started shifting, from the man to the wife From the wife to the serpent, the end of that life The ground was now cursed, to bring forth the thorn In sorrow and labor, a new world was born By the sweat of his brow, he would earn his daily bread Back to the dust, when the spirit has fled. (Outro) He drove them from Eden, the gates shut behind A life of struggle, for all of mankind The cherubim guarded the way to the tree A story of loss, and a longing to be free The garden is quiet, the shadows grow tall The echoes remaining, of the weight of the Fall.
