The birth of our conscious state
He wakes before the light decides to commit the room suspended in that gray where nothing is named yet there is a sound he cannot locate not outside something structural like a building settling or a thought forming too slowly he reaches for the world through glass finds it already in motion already arguing with itself numbers rising languages collapsing faces arranged into certainty no one seems to feel he was told this was coherence that all of it meant something that it led somewhere but the lines do not meet they hover near each other like strangers forced into proximity and something in him resists translation there are days he thinks the fracture is external systems misaligned incentives distorted history repeating because no one remembered it correctly there are other days when the fracture feels inherited as if it arrived in him already assembled a quiet misfire in the architecture he watches people speak with the confidence of completed ideas as though doubt were a phase as though ambiguity were a defect he tries to follow but the words lose their shape halfway through he is left holding tone without meaning (voices begin to gather, not yet unified) we were told to build forward to trust the direction of movement no one mentioned the ground or how often it gives way we were told to speak clearly to define ourselves but the language keeps dissolving before it reaches the mouth we inherit conclusions without ever witnessing the questions he walks through a city that functions perfectly everything arrives on time everything responds and yet there is no sense of arrival only continuation only the quiet insistence that this is working he studies the past not for answers but for evidence that anyone ever understood it every era convinced of its clarity every collapse described afterward as inevitable he wonders which part they are inside the certainty or the explanation (the choir fully forms here, low and unified, but not triumphant) we carry what was never resolved not as knowledge but as weight it lives in the body before it reaches thought in the way breath shortens for no visible reason in the way silence expands even when filled with sound we are not breaking we were assembled this way partial overloaded awake to too many endings at once he tries to locate anger because it would be simpler a direction a vector but what he finds instead is something slower not fire pressure not a scream but an accumulation layered over years over voices over things that almost made sense he cannot release it because it does not point anywhere there is a moment brief almost theoretical where he considers stepping outside it refusing the inheritance refusing the pattern but even that thought arrives pre-formed as if refusal itself had already been anticipated and absorbed (choir fractures, softer, more distant) if there is a beginning it is not where we were told it does not announce itself it does not correct what came before it asks nothing it promises nothing it simply remains possible he does not resolve he continues not forward not backward but within carrying questions that do not close holding tension that does not release watching a world that insists on definition while something unnamed continues to move beneath it quiet unclaimed still becoming
