[verse 1] She scurried through the tube as fast as her arms and legs would carry her. She knew the hunters were behind her somewhere, probably closer than she thought. Closer than she wanted... It really didn't matter, She was lost. Lost in the maze of tunnels that connected the habitats above her. She had wanted out. She was going to get out, the hard way. She swore at herself as she slipped, landing painfully on her chin. [chorus] It's been a long time since she believed All her life has been a masquerade Now she knew too much and had to leave paying for mistake she hadn't known she'd made now the voice inside her head is the only reason she's not dead been a long time since she believed [verse 2] She was drenched in sweat, her hair now matted to her head and face. She rubbed her chin and swore under her breath. She could hear metallic limbs scraping somewhere behind. She didn't know who had let the cat out of the bag, but now she was going to be caught. That made her mad. She began again down the tube, still swearing under her breath. [chorus] It's been a long time since she believed All her life has been a masquerade Now she knew too much and had to leave paying for mistake she hadn't known she'd made now the voice inside her head is the only reason she's not dead been a long time since she believed [verse 3] She didn't pray for help, she didn't have time to pray. She didn't believe in praying anyway. She didn't believe in ghosts or luck, either. "You don't believe in much of anything, do you?" The thought entered her mind. "No, not really, she finished it." "Why not?" She stopped cold. That thought hadn't been hers. She gulped for air. Her breathing was coming hard. She had been pushing herself too hard, and now she was talking to herself. [chorus] It's been a long time since she believed All her life has been a masquerade Now she knew too much and had to leave paying for mistake she hadn't known she'd made now the voice inside her head is the only reason she's not dead been a long time since she believed [verse 4] Why not? It kept her from thinking about the killing machines behind her. "Because I been lied to too many times." She answered and started off again, her heart pounding in her ears. "All my life I've been told this and that, about freedom, about making my own decisions, about life having direction. I'm no more free than a mouse in a trap." She chuckled to herself at the comparison. She felt like a mouse scurrying through these tunnels. "They disproved my freedom when they told me I couldn't leave this rock. [pause] They lied." [chorus] It's been a long time since she believed All her life has been a masquerade Now she knew too much and had to leave paying for mistake she hadn't known she'd made now the voice inside her head is the only reason she's not dead been a long time since she believed [verse5] "You make a good point, -- turn left here." That direction had come casually. She had intended to go straight. She hesitated. "Trust me..." the voice said again. "Who are you?" [3 second pause] "No one of consequence." [fading out] been a long time since she believed been a long time since she believed been a long time since she believed
