The Year of The Dragon (Post Punk)
VERSE 1 February hit like fire in the cold, Red envelopes, strangers saying “boy your luck about to change.” Found a gold dragon necklace at a pawn shop downtown, Old man at the counter said, “Don’t wear it if you hear sounds.” I laughed all the way to March, money falling out the sky, Pretty girls started staring every time I walked by. April moved like magic, every number came alive, Even my worst decisions always somehow turned out right. PRE-CHORUS Everybody said I had the glow, like the universe finally knew my name, But every dream got stranger at night… and the dragon started whispering. CHORUS Year of the Dragon, breathing smoke into my lungs, February gave me fortune— December took it all at once. Every month another warning, every mirror looked possessed, I thought superstition saved me… now it’s sleeping in my chest. VERSE 2 May came dressed in velvet, summer burning neon red, I was dancing through the city hearing voices in my head. June tasted like danger, July moved way too fast, Started seeing shadows moving every time somebody laughed. August brought the blackouts, September killed my sleep, October felt electric like something crawling under me. Friends said I was changing, Mama said to let it go, But every time I took the chain off I got colder than the snow. PRE-CHORUS Now the lucky numbers fading, every room feels way too still, And the dragon in the mirror says he’s hungry for the kill. CHORUS Year of the Dragon, breathing smoke into my veins, Started out like heaven now it’s dancing in the flames. Every month another piece of me disappeared somehow, I thought I was chosen… I think I’m cursed now. BRIDGE November smelled like rain and cigarettes, I couldn’t tell what was real anymore. December lights hanging outside my window, but the dragon was standing at the door. Everybody praying for a new year, countdown playing on the television screen… Midnight hit— …and the necklace started glowing green. OUTRO / TWIST Funny thing about fortune— it never really comes for free. The old man tried to warn me what the dragon likes to keep. You wanna know the worst part? I finally checked the calendar… It wasn’t even the Year of the Dragon.
