Written Prayers — “Black Flag"
[Intro — spoken, almost whispered] God... I heard the flag before I understood the man. He said he wouldn't surrender. He said he wouldn't retreat. And I believe him. But I wonder how tired someone can become while still calling themselves strong. [Verse 1 — intimate conscious rap] He learned early how to keep his shoulders square, how to look at a hard world and dare it to stare. He turned pain into posture, fear into fight, learned how to stand when standing was all he had left. And maybe that's why the black flag means something different when he raises it. It isn't always victory. Sometimes it's a signal. I'm still here. I'm still breathing. Don't count me out. God, You know the difference between rebellion and a person who has spent too long being pushed around by life. You know what happened before anybody read the charges. You know the nights nobody saw. You know the parts he doesn't know how to explain. [Pre-Chorus — rising] So don't let his anger be the only language he has. Don't let the cage become his identity. Don't let survival convince him that peace is weakness. Teach him that laying down a weapon isn't the same thing as laying down his life. [Chorus — haunting, melodic] Black flag raised— but God, let him know he doesn't have to fight every battle alone. When the world says “stay hard,” teach him how to stay human. When the past says “this is who you are,” remind him there is still a future. He's been surviving through the static and fear. Meet him there. Meet him there. [Verse 2 — chopped, darker] He's back behind the walls again. Another consequence. Another door. Another number where a person used to be. And I don't know what he's thinking tonight. Maybe he's angry. Maybe he's numb. Maybe he's already planning how he'll come out swinging. Maybe he's just tired. God— sit with him in the silence. Because everybody knows how to pray for somebody when they're winning. Teach us how to pray when they're losing. When probation breaks. When promises break. When trust breaks. When somebody keeps returning to the same place they swore they'd never see again. Don't reduce him to the worst decision he made. But don't lie to him either. Give him truth without humiliation. Accountability without hopelessness. Consequences without a sentence on his entire existence. [Bridge — beat disappears] God... He says he doesn't surrender. Maybe that's why he needs to learn that surrender isn't defeat. Maybe surrender means: I don't have to control what happens next. I don't have to prove I'm harder than everybody else. I don't have to carry the whole world on my back. Maybe surrender means letting You carry what he cannot. [Silence] Let him put the flag down for a minute. Not forever. Just long enough to remember there's a person holding it. [Beat returns — warmer] [Verse 3] And when he walks out again, don't just give him another chance. Give him a different imagination. Let him see a life that isn't organized around surviving the next crisis. Let him see work that means something. A room that belongs to him. People who don't need him to be dangerous to respect him. A future that doesn't require another fight to earn it. And if he falls again— don't let falling become proof that he was never changing. Teach him that change can be slow. That freedom can feel strange. That peace can feel uncomfortable after years of war. [Final Chorus — expansive] Black flag raised— but God, let him know he doesn't have to fight every battle alone. When the world says “stay hard,” teach him how to stay human. When the past says “this is who you are,” remind him there is still a future. He's been surviving through the static and fear. Meet him there. Meet him there. [Outro — spoken, stripped to piano] I don't know what happens next. I don't know how many times he'll have to begin again. But I know this: He's more than the cage. More than the charge. More than the mistake. More than the flag. God... when he's ready, teach him that he doesn't have to spend the rest of his life proving he can survive. Teach him how to live. Amen.
