Echoes of Yesterday Verse 1 I'm trying to hold the pieces in place, Trying to wear an unbroken face. Walking in the light I know is meant for me, Fighting to become who I'm supposed to be. Every morning starts before I open my eyes, Bracing for a danger that no longer survives. My heart races hard at the slightest sound, Like I'm still trapped in the place where I was found. Pre-Chorus People tell me that the worst is gone, But they don't hear the battle still going on. The body remembers what the mind tries to forget, And some scars haven't stopped bleeding yet. Chorus But the shadows stretch across the floor, Whispering things I've tried to ignore. Tearing at the walls, pulling at the seams, Haunted by the ghosts of my broken dreams. Every closed door feels like a warning sign, Every kind word sounds too good to be mine. I'm reaching for peace through the fear and the shame, Trying to remember I'm not what caused the pain. Verse 2 I learned how to read every room I enter, Searching every face for signs of danger. Always performing, always on guard, Making survival look like working hard. I laugh at the right times, I smile on cue, But nobody sees what I'm pulling myself through. The world sees strength when they look at me, Not the terrified child I'm still trying to free. Pre-Chorus And trust feels like standing too close to the edge, Waiting for the ground beneath me to give. I want to believe that love can remain, But my history teaches a different refrain. Chorus The shadows stretch across the floor, Whispering things I've tried to ignore. Tearing at the walls, pulling at the seams, Haunted by the ghosts of my broken dreams. Memories rise like storms without a name, Dragging me backward through fire and flames. I know where I am, but my soul disagrees, Lost in a flashback nobody else can see. Verse 3 Sometimes a fragrance, a voice, or a song, Can pull me somewhere I've been trying to move on. And suddenly I'm drowning in years gone by, Holding my breath just trying not to cry. It's hard to explain when the threat isn't there, But your body still trembles like you're gasping for air. How do you tell someone you're fighting the past, When the past keeps convincing you the fear will last? Bridge It's not that I'm giving up the fight, I'm just exhausted by the endless night. I want to let love in, I want to feel safe, But I'm caught in the echoes of yesterday. I've built these walls from survival and grief, Stone after stone from shattered beliefs. And though they once saved me from falling apart, Now they're the prison surrounding my heart. Instrumental / Spoken Style Section They call it surviving, and I guess that's true, But survival is heavy when it's all that you do. Being alive isn't the same as being free, When every tomorrow is filtered through memory. I'm tired of apologizing for wounds I didn't choose, Tired of carrying burdens that somebody else produced. Tired of feeling broken because I learned to endure, When enduring was the only way to be secure. Final Chorus Though the shadows stretch across the floor, They don't hold the power they held before. The walls are breaking, the light shines through, Showing me a path that feels honest and true. The ghosts may linger, but they don't decide Who I'll become or how I'll survive. The child inside me is learning at last, That safety can exist beyond the past. Outro I'm still gathering the pieces one by one, Learning that healing isn't something quickly won. Some days I stumble, some days I stand tall, Some days I can barely answer the call. But every breath I take is a victory claimed, Every tear released is a little less shame. And maybe being whole isn't what it seems, Maybe hope begins inside the broken things. Maybe freedom starts when I finally say, "I'm here, I'm alive, and I'm not yesterday."
