I ride the levee every night Looking for the lost, remembering the dead Singing along with all those old songs Before the local radio shuts down for bed I ride the levee every night Hometown ghosts lie asleep in the back The dinner bells from St. Joe are ringing The C&G is whistling down the tracks Where do we ride when the river rises As the road begins changing into water and mud Where do we hide when all that still survives Is only inches away from drowning in the flood I ride the levee every night Jenny always rode the shotgun seat Watching fireflies light up a faceless sky We sang with the radio in perfect harmony I ride the levee every night Jenny left, took the kids, the bank took the rest I brake for memories on these familiar streets Slowing down to watch the river start to crest Where do we ride when the river rises As the road begins changing into water and mud Where do we hide when all that still survives Is only inches away from drowning in the flood I stop in front of the levee barricades Closed roads that lead to all the damage done I lock the truck work my way through the barbed wire Then unlatch the safety on my daddy’s gun
