Little Daisy Lou & Her Didgeridoo
[Verse 1] In a dust-dappled, dingo-drowsy, drowsily dozing town, Lived Little Daisy Lou with a lopsided, lilting frown. She’d puff on a didgeridoo from dawn to drowsy dusk, With a bluster-blown, blippy-blown, billowy bushland musk. [Verse 2] She droned by the billabong, boomed by the boab tree, Bothered the baker, the barman, the beekeeper’s bumblebee. Her breath made a breezy, brassy, bewildering “brrr-brrr-broo,” That tickled the tin roofs and rattled the kangaroo. [Pre-Chorus] And the townfolk tapped their tables and tugged their hats askew, Said, “Daisy, dear, we’re dizzy from your doo-lee-doo-dee-doo.” With a chorus of cautious counsel, croaky yet true and quaint: “Didgeridon’t, little Lou—give the quiet a coat of paint.” [Chorus] Didgeridon’t, didgeridon’t, Don’t drone that dandy didge all day long. Didgeridon’t, didgeridon’t, Don’t boom that bellowin’ bushland song. But Daisy Lou just grinned and blew, Let the long-note loop like a lazy lasso— Didgeridon’t? Well, Daisy Lou Said, “Diddle-I-do—and I’ll do it so!” [Verse 3] She practiced peculiar, percussive, pulsating purrs, With wobbles and warbles and whirligig whirs. She swayed in the shade with a shimmery shoo, Made a zigzag, zany, zoot-zoom “zoo-oo-oo.” [Verse 4] The mayor made a memo with meticulous might, “Moderate music, Miss Lou, in the middle of night.” The constable coughed in a courteous cue, “Consider some silence… a smidge… or two.” [Pre-Chorus] But Daisy kept doodlin’ a drifty, droning tune, While the kookaburras cackled at her midnight moon. And the chorus grew louder, a plaintive, polite front: “Didgeridon’t, little Lou—please don’t, we don’t!” [Chorus] Didgeridon’t, didgeridon’t, Don’t drone that dandy didge all day long. Didgeridon’t, didgeridon’t, Don’t boom that bellowin’ bushland song. But Daisy Lou just grinned and blew, Let the long-note loop like a lazy lasso— Didgeridon’t? Well, Daisy Lou Said, “Diddle-I-do—and I’ll do it so!” [Bridge] Then one windy, whistly, wild-weather day, A dusty deluge drifted in, dimming the way. The sky went slate, the streets went still, And the town held tight by the ridge and the hill. Daisy drew a deep, determined breath, Let a low, long line loom from life’s soft depth— A rumble, a roll, a resonant roo, That rallied the rafters and rang right through. [Final Chorus] Didgeridoo-do! Didgeridoo-do! Now the town taps time to Daisy Lou. Didgeridoo-do! Didgeridoo-do! From “don’t” to “do,” hear the outback crew. They clap and whoop to the looping groove, While the red-dust roads all rise and move— Didgeridoo-do! For Daisy Lou, And her boomerang-blown, bold didgeridoo. [Outro] In that dust-dappled, dingo-drowsy, newly-not-nervous town, Little Daisy Lou plays on—and the sun goes sliding down.
