Verse 1 The horizon is red. Vibrant colors swirl around me In a hazy filter Of yellows, scarlets, greys, Mingled with dust. In the distance, In a small grove of trees, Three men stand In a semi-circle watching. They do not speak. They stand still and watch. ⸻ Verse 2 Their dark hair falls Down to their shoulders. The ends are gathered In multiple braids. Small shells, Stones, Beads, Feathers Are woven into their hair. They shift and shimmer In the haze, Like a heat mirage On a hot summer day. They do not smile. They do not frown. They do not beckon. They just watch. ⸻ Pre-Chorus One man Raises his index finger To his mouth. Then extends his hand Toward me. Blowing air out That appears In a swirl of color. Like light That sparkles And reflects off water. Then they are still. ⸻ Chorus I am not sure What it means. I wonder why They keep their distance. Why they are here. They do not speak. They just watch. ⸻ Verse 3 In front of me, A woman With long dark hair Appears. She holds a stick About twelve inches long. She drops to her knees At the base Of a large juniper tree. Its bark and branches Twisted. Defined. Thirsty. ⸻ Verse 4 The wind tangles The ends of dark hair. Lifting them in the air Where they seem to suspend. As if frozen in place. She wears grey. Drab colors. The only brightness Is a line Of small red agates Threaded on a string. Woven in her hair. ⸻ Bridge She turns her head. Eyes silver. Shiny. Otherworldly. She motions To the ground. She does not speak. But I know What she means. There is something In the ground For me. She is giving me something From the ground. She wants me To find it. ⸻ Final Chorus I drop to the ground On my knees. I dig In the red soil. The ground crumbles In my hand. I dig. And dig. And seem to get nowhere. Each clasp of soil Runs through my fingers. She reaches Long greyish fingers Toward my hands. I look down. I see several objects. They are not clear. But I know They are there. ⸻ Outro And then… I awake.
