If the Author Knows the Truth: God's View Is More Complete

Everyone who knows me Knows a different part of me. Some have seen my strongest moments, Some the places I was weak. Some remember how I loved them, Some remember where I'd fall. Every picture holds some truth, Lord, But no picture holds it all. Even those who love me dearly Cannot know my every thought, Every reason for a choice I made, Every lesson I was taught. And those who see me through their hurting May see things I cannot see— But neither love nor disappointment Holds the whole picture of me. We're looking through our partial mirrors, Each reflecting what we know. But there is One who sees the whole view— Every place I've been and where I'll go. You see the whole of me— The parts I hide, the parts I show, The things I understand today, The things I still don't know. You know the heart behind my choices, And the choices I got wrong. You know where I need forgiveness, And where I've been too hard on myself too long. No human eyes can hold the measure Of all I've lived and all I'll be. Your view is more complete, Lord. You see the whole of me. Sometimes someone else's version Wants me to question what I know. Sometimes praise can make me bigger Than the truth would ever show. Sometimes I defend my motives When instead I should seek to learn. Sometimes I carry blame that's not mine, Carrying weight I never earned. Please don't let praise become my mirror. Don't let blame become one too. Help me listen, learn, and question— And then bring it all to You. You know what happened before the moment. You know what happened after, too. You know the things we couldn't know then, And what each one was trying to do. You know the wounds that shaped my thinking. You know the wounds that have shaped theirs. You know what we misunderstood about each other, The hidden hurts we couldn't share. So show me where I need repenting. Show me what I need to mend. Show me where I need more mercy, Where forgiveness should begin. I don't need You to agree with me. I need You to make me true. I'd rather lose the story I defended Than lose the chance to grow with You. I don't need to win the story If the Author knows the truth. I don't need the world to validate What only You can fully view. And I don't need to fear discovering That I still have things to change. Because the One who sees me perfectly Still calls me by my name. You see the whole of me— Not the hero, not the blame, Not the best thing I have ever done Or my worst remembered day. You see every contradiction, Each strength and weakness I have known. Every road that lies behind me, Every road I've yet to go. So when another's view is different, Help me listen before I speak. There may be truth I haven't noticed, There may be healing we both seek. But when I've listened, prayed, and searched, Lord, Let Your judgment set me free. For no one here can know completely Who another soul can be. We see moments. You see lifetimes. We see pieces. You see whole. And when every partial mirror Finally gives way to truth, I'll know myself And know Your children More completely— As You do.
