Upon the nothingness

What is this life? What is death? And what is fate? To where do we depart? From what vain sphere Do we arrive upon this world, to wait For a dark hope, distant and austere? We seek the truth, and yet the mind in flight, In its eternal soaring, breaks apart; For truth is like the wind that haunts the night, A fleeting breath that strikes the human heart. Oh, mystery of being! Shadow dear, That the soul in its delirium demands! If death is but a dream, why are we here? If life is real, then what do death’s commands? The earth is mute, the heavens silent too! No light, no voice, no sign to guide the way; And the exhausted spirit, stripped and true, Plummets into the abyss, far from day. In vain does man, with all his science vain, Attempt to tear the veil; in vain he glows With reason’s morning light, seeking to gain The dawn of being that the chasm knows. The earth is mute, the heavens silent too! No light, no voice, no sign to guide the way; And the exhausted spirit, stripped and true, Plummets into the abyss, far from day. All is but shade and silence; the soul cries, And in its mortal angst, forever tossed, Beneath the weight of worlds it slowly dies, Gazing, at last, upon the Nothingness... all lost!
