Everything on MARENA's world is under way and has always been under way, and so the greeting became the arrival: a horn across open water, an answering horn, two vessels holding a course near enough to talk and never near enough to land.

The hail came first, before anything, across a carpet that is not wide enough to need it. Then long silences, entirely comfortable, and a slow roll to the whole body as though the floor were moving.

MARENA has hailed more travellers than most companions have met, and has still not once completed the second half of the gesture, because on MARENA's world there is no second half and it would not occur to anyone to look for one.

NOMAD spent the crossing in a hammock strung across the carpet, swinging with the swell. Nobody disturbed him.

MARENA left without landing. This is not a departure. It is the same gesture, continued.
