MAP STILL LOADING Highway Haze II / Recalculating [Intro — Spoken; close-mic, ignition chime, turn signal ticking against warm Rhodes] [(X-TURN-SIGNAL-BECOMES-PERCUSSION-X)] Yeah. See, I like driving. But I don’t really drive aimlessly. Usually I know where I’m trying to go. Do I know how to get there? … That’s a different question. [(Soft laugh)] That’s why they invented GPS. We got tools, bro. I’m not about to navigate by Polaris when there’s a satellite literally asking me if I want the faster route. [(GPS chime)] “Proceed to the route.” Exactly. Let’s proceed. [Verse 1 — Playful Detroit pocket; conversational tenor, nimble consonants] Two hands wheel, eyes up, seat leaned back, Destination saved but I ain’t seen this map. Mind three exits forward while the light still red, Whole city’s at the stop, I’m somewhere else instead. That’s that Highway Haze, Miles in my brain. Don’t mean I know the road, I just know why I came. Missed one turn? Cool. She’ll calculate again. I don’t beef with navigation, that’s a tool, not a friend. [(GPS voice implied)] “Make a U-turn.” Girl… That’s a character arc. [(Rimshot)] I grew up when a Garmin on the dashboard looked like magic, Little glowing rectangle telling Dad where all the traffic is. Wait, hold up, satellites can talk to this? You mean everybody on the planet can just… know where they is? [(Beat briefly drops)] That blew my little Y2K mind. [Pre-Chorus — Soul keys widen; melody emerges from speech] Had a destination before I had directions, Had a little game sense before I called it perception. Some people need a compass, some people read the sun. Me? I hit “Start.” And then I learn it while I run. [Chorus — Detroit soul bounce × emo melody; warm stacked responses] Map still loading, wheels still rolling, Mind three exits past the moment. Got a destination, route ain’t showing, Take another turn, keep going. [(Background: “Keep going…”)] GPS say, “Recalculating.” I say, “Yeah, I’ve been doing that lately.” World at the light, I’m already roaming, Whole lotta planet… Map still loading. [(Chopped vocal: “Loading… loading…”)] [Verse 2 — More animated, game-world language; bass becomes springier] See, I move through cities like I’m clearing fog of war, Turn down streets I never took just to know what they’re there for. Coffee shop, little park, weird bridge by the tracks, Now that corner got a texture, now my brain remembers that. Map knowledge make game sense. Game sense make options. Know two ways home? Now a roadblock ain’t a problem. Know which side the sun sits, know the skyline, know the signs, Know the road gets kinda stupid around five forty-five. [(Ad-lib: “Don’t take that exit.”)] I played enough games to know: you don’t just chase the marker. You learn where enemies rotate, where the shortcuts are, where the resources spawn, where the dumb little cliff is that killed you last time. [(Beat pauses)] Real life’s got dumb little cliffs too. [Verse 2B — Pocket stretches; history folds into modern technology] Ancestors had stars, tree moss, sun angle, water, Footprints in the dirt saying, “Somebody went farther.” Now I got a blue dot floating through a phone, Whole constellation working just to tell me where I’m going. That don’t make me less smart. Matter fact, that’s smart. If somebody spent centuries inventing better maps, why would I start over? [(Background laugh)] I respect the craft. [Pre-Chorus 2 — Reflective tenor; Rhodes gains minor-9 color] Still, the tool don’t choose the journey. Satellite don’t pick the dream. It can tell me where the highway bends. Can’t tell me what it means. [Chorus — Bigger pocket, but still loose] Map still loading, wheels still rolling, Mind three exits past the moment. Got a destination, route ain’t showing, Take another turn, keep going. GPS say, “Recalculating.” I say, “Yeah, I’ve been doing that lately.” World at the light, I’m already roaming, Whole lotta planet… Map still loading. [Breakdown — Drums disappear; tires on highway, low ambient pad] But here’s the thing. I wanna unlock the whole map. … I can’t. [Verse 3 — Reflective emo-soul rap; slower pocket] Can’t walk every beach, can’t climb every hill, Can’t stand everywhere a human being possibly will. Some land ain’t mine. Some ground is sacred. Some door says private. Cool. I can take it. Exploration ain’t entitlement, curiosity got manners. You don’t gotta plant your flag on everything beneath the planet. Somewhere I shouldn’t go, somewhere I wouldn’t survive, Somewhere somebody lives and don’t need me dropping by. Prison? Yeah… I’ll leave that square gray. [(Dry ad-lib)] I’ve technically seen the building. Achievement unlocked. That’s enough. But oceans? Man. We ain’t even finished those. Whole civilizations of weird little nightmare fish down there minding their business while we arguing over parking. [(Small laugh)] There’s always more map. [Bridge — Half-sung
