Title : One Cloud Away One Cloud Away I’ve spent my whole life one cloud away Close enough to feel the air shift shape It brought me here, and now it’s calling me again The roof still holds The rain still comes But something's changed without a sound That same voice that got me home Won't let me leave these walls alone I followed it when it led me here I’ll follow where it goes Even if it pulls apart The only home I’ve known I felt the rain before it hit us Saw the line of dark behind the hill Pulled the reeds and split the branches Worked until my hands went numb It was barely more than cover Just enough to keep them near Someone laughed beneath the rafters Someone said, “You can stay here” I tied the roof a little tighter Watched the water roll away For the first time in a long time I could name the place I’d stay I never knew what made me listen Never knew how I could tell I only knew the sky kept warning Long before the weather fell I’ve spent my whole life one cloud away Heard the change before it got a name When it brought me here, I built these walls And they finally knew my face I followed it when it led me here I’ll follow where it goes Even if it pulls apart The only home I’ve known Then the doorway turned to hallway Then the hallway turned to rooms Every winter added timber Every spring another beam We kept straw tucked in the corners Kept the kindling stacked and dry Old nails held the newer rafters Higher than I thought we’d try They called me builder at the table Said it plain, like it was true And I wore it like a work shirt Like something I could finally use I knew each joint by how it settled Knew each board by weight and sound So when the warm wind moved beneath us I WAS THE FIRST TO LOOK AROUND I’ve spent my whole life one cloud away Close enough to feel the whole sky change Now the roof still holds, the rain still falls And something shifts beneath the frame I followed it when it led me here I’ll follow where it goes Even if it pulls apart The only home I’ve known I said we ought to clear the center Take the dry wood from the wall Open space between the rafters Let a little weather fall They looked up at what was holding Then looked back at me confused Why would anyone pull apart What’s kept us standing here? One said I was getting nervous One said I never knew when to stop One said maybe I loved the building More than all the hands it held And I carried every word they gave me Through the rooms I’d made my own Wondering if I heard a warning Or just wanted proof I’d grown Maybe there is nothing coming Maybe I misread every sign Maybe all I do is let rain in And call the damage justified I’ve spent my whole life one cloud away That’s where the weather starts to change It brought me here when no one knew me Now it might be leading me away The fire may never show its face But the rain I let in has a shape They may never see what I was saving They will know exactly what I gave I followed it when it led me here I’ll follow where it goes Even if it pulls apart The only home I’ve known Before the light had reached the windows I set new stone beneath the frame Put my hand against the oldest binding Listened once and heard the same Behind me, all the rooms were sleeping Warm beneath the roof I made I loosened the first tie And let the rain in.
