Still Water Drift The surface holds a mirror to the sky Where silver clouds and heavy spirits lie I laid my oars across the wooden floor And let the current pull me from the shore No longer fighting what I cannot tame I whisper low a long-forgotten name. In the still water drift, I find my peace Where the frantic pull of living finds release The anchor’s gone, the weight has fallen deep A promise that the river’s bound to keep It is the faith of Man to trust the flow To lose the way so he might finally know. The reeds are bowing as I pass them by Underneath the watchful, silent eye I used to fear the shadows in the bed The tangled doubts that filled a weary head But grace is fluid, moving through the dark To guide the timber of this hollow bark. In the still water drift, I find my peace Where the frantic pull of living finds release The anchor’s gone, the weight has fallen deep A promise that the river’s bound to keep It is the faith of Man to trust the flow To lose the way so he might finally know. The storm will break, the winds will surely rise To test the light within a mortal’s eyes But even when the rapids start to foam The steady pulse of mercy leads us home. The evening falls in shades of violet hue The world is old, but every breath is new I do not steer, I do not seek the land I place my spirit in a higher hand For every Man must learn to just exist Within the beauty of the morning mist. Just drifting now... Let the river take the wheel... In the quiet... In the still... [©2026 By Matthew E Treviño]
