Velvet Confessions

I’ve danced with every demon from Soho to Spain, yeah? Drank the well dry and snorted the rain. Bedposts looking like a forest of scars, I’ve done things that’d make the devil hide under the stars. Passed a church, thought, ‘Why not have a laugh?’ Walked in the pews, took a velvet-lined path. Sat in the box, smelled the incense and dust, Ready to spill my beautiful, filthy lust. Hallelujah... or is it hell? The secrets we keep, the stories we tell... I leaned to the screen, whispered "Father, listen close," To the ghosts of the nights that I haunted the most. I told him 'bout the neon, the gray, and the cold, And the pieces of spirit I’d bartered and sold. I went into detail, didn't leave out a thing, The weight of the crown and the bite of the ring. I heard his breath hitch, a heavy, long sigh, Like a holy man watching the clouds drifting by. Kyrie Eleison... let the rhythm take control, The weight of the sin is the weight of the soul... Then came the silence from behind the grate, A moment of tension, a struggle with fate. The priest, he was quiet, just losing his grip, I could hear his old rosary beads start to slip. I told him 'bout the shadows and the flickering light, And how I stayed awake through the middle of the night. He let out a sound, not a prayer, but a plea, I whispered, "Oi, Father... can you hear me?" Sanctus... Sanctus... the light fades away, The echoes of words at the end of the day. The wooden door creaked as he stood in the light, A figure of shadows against the cold night. His expression was weary, his heart full of glass, Watching the moments and memories pass. "The world is a journey," he said with a sigh, "With paths that we follow and stars in the sky." He walked past the candles with a steady, slow pace, Seeking a new and a different place. Now the road is calling beneath the pale moon, To a rhythmic, low, and mysterious tune. Walking the line where the shadows all meet, With the dust of the ages on tired old feet. He’s looking for answers, and so am I, Under the vast and the thundering sky. It’s a strange ending in a world gone mad, The most curious time that we’ve ever had.
