------------ Inspired by the real story of Oleksii Anulia (Алексей Ануля/Олексій Ануля), who survived ten months of captivity and later wrote about his experience in book "Jingle Bellz". It reflects resilience, memory, and the quiet strength of those who return from the unimaginable. ------------- So… sit. Smoke if you want. Let the air slow down. I once read — the body meets shock in three ways: fight, run, or go still like an empty coat on the roadside. I was seven when I saw what stays after a human is finished. The Union dying. School trip to a camp they kept as a warning. “To each his own” over the gate. Rooms made to erase sound. Skin used as objects. Teeth piled like gravel. Bones that forgot how to speak. Something inside me closed its hand into a fist. Not a decision — just a shape. Fear lived under my bed for months. My mother said: “Don’t hide from it. Look at it. Drag it out. Throw it out.” And it left. Life spun on. Love, street smoke, loss, laughter, war, winter, waiting. Then — a man on an interview screen. And the old memory sat beside me again. He grew into a fighter — metal in muscle, steady breath. Trained like survival was a craft. 102 kilos before the war. Feet familiar with long distances. February. Sky like a locked jaw. He and his father walked into enlistment. No speeches. Just movement. Chernihiv. Villages turning into borderlines. Mud. Blood. Cold breath. The father saved forty-two people. Then was taken. Burned inside a church. Silence where prayer should be. The son tried to return. One local word reversed the whole direction. Hands. Road. Boots. Language torn out of his mouth. Then — captivity. Chains biting into skin. Hunger gnawing the bones. Hands suspended six days in firelike pain. A crematorium breathed behind the wall — smoke silent but screaming into every eye, every lung, every dream. He said: Hunger has no metaphors. When the earthworms rose after rain, he watched them like rope. Hunger so deep the worms in the soil look like soup. Four nights he hunted a mouse without moving — breath held thin as a thread. When he caught it, he held it in his mouth not to lose it. Life tastes like metal and fur when the world forgets you. Sewage drippin’ from twenty cells — that smell: straight outta hell. He drank toilet water just to live. When all you got is pain, you learn to forgive. Forty kilos gone. Six centimeters of height lost. The torturers — they took pride in their work. Not chaos — technique. Cruel like surgery. Methodical like factory steps. The journalist lowered his eyes. I went outside and smoked three cigarettes in a row. Over a hundred days without light. When the mind began to split, he heard his grandmother: “You forgot the gifts for the kids.” So he stayed. December 31st. Exchange. New air. Bones broken. Name intact. Seventeen surgeries. Voice steady. ( PAUSE ) That’s it. No lesson. No verdict. No hymn. Just a man who returned from a place designed to unmake a human. Remember this. Don’t look away.
