Shadows Danced

Dusty Americana ballad with male vocals, warm pedal steel swells, soft brushed kit and upright bass, Verses stay intimate and close-mic’d, almost a whisper; chorus widens with stacked harmonies and a steady backbeat, Subtle organ pad fills the gaps, steel guitar answers vocal phrases with lyrical bends, Gentle dynamic rise into the last chorus, then a bare vocal-and-steel outro, simple

V4.5-ALL

[Verse 1] The sky darkened the day The shadows danced on the barn door Coffee gone cold in my hand Your truck not in the drive anymore [Chorus] The sky darkened the day the shadows danced Like they knew what I was losing at a glance Every board Every nail in this old house knew When the light pulled back It pulled you too [Verse 2] Your note on the table Folded twice Just my name Wind pushed dust through the hallway Even the picture frames looked ashamed [Chorus] The sky darkened the day the shadows danced Like they knew what I was losing at a glance Every board Every nail in this old house knew When the light pulled back It pulled you too [Bridge] I still park in the same old spot (oh, I do) Talk out loud like you just walked in But the darker it gets ’round here The clearer it is you won’t again [Chorus] The sky darkened the day the shadows danced Left me turning in a circle In a trance Every board Every nail in this old house knew When the light pulled back It pulled you too [Outro] [Steel guitar lingers under soft vocal] The sky darkened the day And it never quite brightened for me after you
