Ego check
From Jerusalem to the World! Book of Hosea. It's so easy to read this book and put the crown on our own heads. "I am the faithful prophet. I was betrayed, I was left behind. I am Hosea." It's a nice, comfortable interpretation for the ego. Until God sits next to you, looks you in the eye, and says: "Do you really think you're Hosea? I am Hosea. And you... you are Israel. Check your Ego." I opened up the pages looking for a shield, Looking for some backup on this battlefield. I read about the man who loved without a bound, While the woman that he married dragged him to the ground. I saw myself right there, wearing the loyal cape, The martyr of the story looking for escape. I was the good guy, staying by the fire, The one who gave it all and ended in the mire. I was so comfortable judging from the throne, Keeping the receipts of being left alone. Until an echo bounced across the empty room, And a sudden beam of light cut right through the gloom... Oh, the pride of my ego, playing the savior's part! When I am the one who's running with a wandering heart! I am not Hosea standing faithful at the door... I am Gomer getting lost upon the market floor! I traded all Your grace to feed my vanity, I sold the holy covenant for my insanity. Lord, forgive my blindness and the pride I hold... You are the one who buys me back when I am sold. How many times have I chased my own desires, Trying to find some comfort in the strangest fires. The ego and control, the logic and the pride, They were the secret lovers keeping me untied. I pointed at the splinter in another's eye, Missing the heavy beam that blocked my own sky. You pulled me off the pedestal of my own pain. You showed me I'm the one standing in the rain. And the craziest part of this mirror from above... Is that You meet my worst condition with Your love. Fifteen pieces of silver. And You bought me back. I am Gomer. And You brought me home.
