TIME 021 – The White Sphinx Opens | The Time Machine

(Verse 1) The Traveller crossed the garden to the Sphinx of ghostly white, And found its bronze doors standing open in the morning light. The sealed and silent pedestal no longer barred the way, And deep within its shadowed hall his lost machine now lay. (Verse 2) He entered with suspicion as the chamber swallowed sound, And saw the brass and crystal frame still waiting on the ground. No welcome marked its rescue and no mercy shaped the plan, The Morlocks had returned it there to bait the desperate man. (Chorus) The White Sphinx opened wide and drew him inward to the snare, While hidden hands were waiting in the darkness of the lair. He reached the machine before the pale forms closed the space, Then threw himself through time before the Morlocks seized their prey. (Verse 3) The shadows rushed around him as he struggled for the seat, And grasping fingers crowded near his body and his feet. He fought to reach the lever while the chamber filled with cries, And pale distorted faces pressed like phantoms round his eyes. (Verse 4) At last his hand found metal and he drove the lever through, The room dissolved around him as the rushing ages grew. The Morlocks fell behind him with the Sphinx and garden plain, And time became his refuge as the world ran wild again. (Chorus) The White Sphinx opened wide and drew him inward to the snare, While hidden hands were waiting in the darkness of the lair. He reached the machine before the pale forms closed the space, Then threw himself through time before the Morlocks seized their prey. (Bridge) He left the broken future and the people born of night, Still carrying Weena's memory beyond their reach and sight. No triumph filled his spirit as the centuries swept past, For all that world had taught him left a shadow deep and vast. (Outro) The Sphinx receded from him as the ages spun away, And countless years collapsed beneath the lever's forward sway. He fled not back to safety, but towards a stranger clime, A hunted man escaping by surrendering to time.
