Midnight Runner’s Requiem (Caboose Blues

V5

Midnight Runner’s Requiem (Caboose Blues) (Genre: Psychedelic Blues Rock / Alternative. Tone: Dark, desperate, raw, highly cynical. Instrumentation features heavy, distorted slide guitar and punching drums. Vocal style is a powerful, abrasive belt in the vein of early Janis Joplin.) (Opening: Distorted, heavy blues riff on a slide guitar, mimicking the screech of metal on metal. Drums kick in slow and punishing. A faint steam whistle wails in the distance.) VERSE 1 (Low, gravelly start, building power) I stuffed the shame down with the last of the cheap rye, left the gravy cold upon the sill. Yeah, that lonely steam whistle howled across the delta, promised me a ride straight down to the kill. This ain't no gilded highway, baby, this is just the iron track tonight. Standing on the back porch of this dirty caboose, waving smoke into the pale moonlight. It was Thanksgiving, y’know, the day they make you grateful? I was just choking on the sweet smell of the lie. Gave 'em the finger when the clock struck midnight, said, “You can keep your sugar, I just need to fly.” PRE-CHORUS (Building pace, drums get faster) The wind is tearing strips right off my worn-out leather sleeve, But I got a different fire burning, honey, one that won't deceive. Struck a match on the cold, cold rail, watched the paper catch the light— Gonna burn this wicked world down before it burns me outta sight. CHORUS (Powerful, desperate belt. Call and Response Structure—must be shouted/screamed) (CALL - Lead Vocal) OH, LORD, I GOT THE FREIGHT TRAIN RUMBLE! (RESPONSE - Gritty, almost gospel Backing Vocals) DOWN TO THE BONE! (CALL) AND I GOT THAT SWEET SMOKE CHOKIN'! (RESPONSE) LEAVE ME ALONE! (CALL) THIS AIN'T NO HEAVEN I'M CHASIN', YOU HEAR ME? (RESPONSE) JUST ASH AND FIRE! (CALL) GONNA RIDE THIS RATTLING COFFIN DOWN! I’M RIDING! (RESPONSE) HIGHER AND HIGHER! VERSE 2 (Slightly slower, accusatory tone, heavy snare hits) They said I was a failure, said I wouldn't hold the line, just another woman born to waste her time. They polish up their virtue, fold their hands in prayer and fear, While the only honest thing I’ve ever tasted is the dirt and the cheap beer. They got their perfect little plastic homes and picket fences white, I got the smell of coal dust and dynamite! Tried to keep me stitched up in their neat little Sunday dress, But Daddy, I just bought a different kind of happiness. The cold metal is digging into my spine, yeah, it feels like truth, ‘Cause metal doesn't judge you like the ghosts of your damned youth! CHORUS (Full force, louder, more frantic) (CALL) OH, LORD, I GOT THE FREIGHT TRAIN RUMBLE! (RESPONSE) DOWN TO THE BONE! BRIDGE / GUITAR SOLO (Instrumental break: The music swells. A blistering, feedback-laden guitar solo takes center stage—blending blues scale wails with heavy alternative distortion. The sound should feel uncontrolled, like the train is flying off the rails slightly. The rhythmic chuffing of the steam engine is audible beneath the noise.) VERSE 3 (Quiet, almost spoken, deeply cynical, over a slow, grinding riff) I watched the stars get muddy through the haze of the sweet leaf, And realized all my freedom is just a heavy kind of grief. This smoke, yeah, it’s a shroud, a black velvet curtain, hiding out the light when I ain't certain. I don't know where this line is going, or what town is gonna catch me out. But the train keeps calling, black and sharp and true, and there ain’t nothing left to lie about. It's just me and the darkness, and the hiss of the damn steam, And the final, burning evidence of a dead, dirty dream. OUTRO (The music fades slowly, leaving only the heavy, rattling rhythm and feedback) (Whispered/Shouted, trailing off) Yeah... just me and the smoke... just me and the steel... (Heavy cough) Tell 'em I paid the ticket. Paid the damn price! (Final, jarring feedback scream, followed by the distant heavy "CHUFF-CHUFF" of the steam engine slowly disappearing into silence.)
