Receipt from the Day I Broke

Verse 1 I found a receipt in my jacket From a store that closed years ago. It was for a version of myself I apparently used to know. I kept the change in my pockets, All the things I couldn’t say. Funny how you can lose your whole life And still remember one Tuesday. Pre-Chorus I got good at being missing While standing in the room. Everybody saw the picture, Nobody saw the bruise. Chorus I’m the receipt from the day I broke, The thing nobody meant to keep. Proof that something was here before It disappeared quietly. I’m the last song on a dead radio, Still playing for somebody gone. I’m the name written in wet cement That the rain keeps rubbing off. Verse 2 I keep my apologies in a shoebox, Stacked underneath my bed. All the words I never got to say Still screaming in my head. I laugh at the wrong moments, I cry at the wrong songs. I think I lost myself so slowly Nobody knew I was gone. Bridge If you ever find the old me, Don’t tell him what I became. Just tell him I was trying… Even when I looked away. Final Chorus I’m the receipt from the day I broke, Faded ink and crooked lines. A little proof that I existed Before I ran out of time. And if somebody asks about me, Say I was more than what you see. I wasn’t hard to love… I was just tired of being everything.
