Dedication: For my two beloved rescue dogs -- who really did come to me from Alabama. I often think of their frightening, 30-hour journeys that they both had to undergo to make it to their new home with me. As only puppies! One was too traumatized to even come out of his transport van -- and couldn't stop trembling amid his terror, after they finally got him into my waiting arms. Glad to report that he is now my happy, happy boy! NOTES ON THIS SONG ARE AT THE VERY BOTTOM --------------------------------------------------------------- OH! SUSANNA I have a dream In the middle of night When ev'rything is still I think I see⦠Susanna, She's runninā down a hill A cake of buck-wheat It fills her mouth Her tears are steam, They crowd her eyes I say, "I'm cominā from the south, My Susanna, Don't ya cry" Oh! Susanna Oh, donāt ya cry for me I come from Alabama With my banjo on my knee Original song published by Stephen Foster circa 1848 Restoration, arrangement, new melody & additional lyrics Copyright 4-4-2025 by LKN -------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES: āOh! Susannaā is one of the most popular American songs ever written. Although it was composed in the folk traditon, it actually takes its beat from polka (1,2,1,2ā¦). It was authored by Stephen Foster, who (due to its massive success) then went on to become the first full-time professional songwriter in the United States. (Check out his other masterful works.) Over the years, bits and pieces and even full verses were redacted from this song, until it lost its original intention: the documentation of a harrowing and perilous journey. This also left the song almost cheery and nonsensical: Why in the world does Susanna want to cry? Her loverās on his way⦠Heās even gonna play his banjo for her! So I myself never really understood nor appreciated this song ā until I stumbled across some of those lost verses, while simply looking for its lyrics⦠And I was searching for them as I was in a guitar group that wished to perform this. I told them that I thought we had a real chance here ā and asked them if we could please put back at least one of those redacted verses? Answer: No. āDo I even need to finish this story? Via this platform, I was finally able to happily restore this song in only one long morning and afternoon: something that Iād been wanting to do, for already five years. While I was at it, I also revised/re-metered its entire lyrics (save the chorus) to give them a new melody. I next decided to change its structure by adding a bridge that I fashioned from a discarded verse/additional lyrics. Then I made another decision to NOT have any banjo on it (the banjo being an obvious choice) and to instead feature banjolele -- yet only as its main rhythm instrument. āThank you, SUNO! P.S. And my old guitar group? They disbanded. When one of its two leaders moved to Florida. š

Thanks! I feel like I now have a little bit of a better window, into your own taste...

How can words even capture the beauty of this song?
A reinterpretation of a great classic, that song we all know, the very embodiment of American folk.
I donāt think you could have chosen a more iconic piece to represent the USA, its roots, and its musical tradition.
But your version elevates it, makes it modern, with that fantastic female vocal performance and your revised lyrics.
The banjo is perfect gritty, but warm and the percussion adds an epic touch that makes the track thrilling.

Poetic, story of devotion and hardship. With a surreal dream aspect
LKN š 9w ago
Wow! Thanks, Wavy... Yes, the "dream sequence" that I placed as the bridge is actually another verse that was cut out of this song, over the years.... It makes me happy, simply to see it back there!

So listen. I was also familiar with this song and probably never saw any of the other lyrics either. And I was never a fan of the original song before -- but my goodness, this is beautiful and so pleasant to listen to. And with your efforts to emulate closer its original tone, I'm such a fan! I'm so happy to have reached out to you and gotten the chance to meet you - I respect and appreciate the thoughtful work you do with your music so much <3

Thanks so much, Nepenthe. Yes, I'll admit that previous, superficial versions of this song even got on my nerves... Then I came across those lost verses and learned what it was really supposed to be about. BTW, I left the relationship here same-sex in your honor -- because (as prev discussed) I feel we ALL (not just some of us) deserve to have our lives reflected back to us via the arts. Thanks for listening to my concerns re: diversity and the way we've already worked together to increase it!

AMIX, you found it already! That makes me happy. Yet I am actually a JUDGE in this! (As much as I love the idea of having your vote.)

Iām new here, but Iām so glad I heard this⨠What a beautiful dedication to your little guardians of joy. I loved itāsuch a moving story, a catchy chorus, and I adore the southern feel. Iāve never tried making indie folk rock myself, but I always appreciate listening to the genreš©µ

Thanks so much, Anja! And welcome. I'm touched by your phrase "little guardians of joy" -- so true! I only hope you'll enter this new song showcase? If so, I'm wishing you the best with that -- and everything else!

Thanks so much! Yes, if you know the other, redacted versions? It's a tragedy, how much power was stripped from this song's original composition. I was riveted, when I simply read its lost verses. So happy to have them back where they belong!

Amazing, you may get lost in the beautiful melody, but the lyrics keep calling attention to the meaning. Great track, love it.

Thank you so much! You actually made me resume my journey to restore this song: when I did my other recent one for your excellent kindergarten challenge. I had this idea about five years ago, when my guitar group was going to perform this song -- yet they vetoed my idea to put back some of its redacted verses.
Otherwise, thank you again for all your hard work in regard to your own recent challenge.... I love how these events help to bring our community together.

I note that you're sticking with the same theme as your previous song, with nursery rhymes and popular songs from the United States.
That's very good; it gives meaning to artistic creation.
There's always a human being behind an AI-assisted creation; thank you for reminding us of that with your song.
LKN š 9w ago
Thank you, Lucilius. I just took an AI Songwriting class at Berklee, and fully one-third of it was ethical discussions/essays. Authenticity has always been important in music, yet now it's maybe even MORE so, when it comes to AI music: It's a powerful tool that can be used to different ends. We all have this same powerful chance here, to achieve some good things for the world. BTW, you yourself are already doing this, in the way that you both build and support community. Thank YOU!

This is lovely, I have two rescue dogs too, Pretzel and Cosmo. This really reminds me of Cosmo. I originally planned to adopt an older dog, closer to Pretzelās age, but when I saw Cosmo, he was so terrified. I knew right then, we had to get him out of there. It's been almost a year now. No regrets.
LKN š 9w ago
100 per cent. I fell in love with my boy at first sight (via his lone photo that his rescue had taken). They had just pulled him out of a high-kill shelter situation. He was cowering and looked absolutely terrified in that shot. (Esp since he's a sensitive retriever type.) Adopting him w/o meeting him in-person felt like agreeing to a maybe 10-year long blind date so I was super nervous. Now? Best decision I ever made. Lovely to hear about your own two precious rescues! Thanks for sharing it.

This is good, really really good. It is a radio hit. The only thing I fear is that her bottom could get wet there. But yeah that is nature and she is so in her play that she doesn't care.

Thank you very much. As I am such a fan of your own work, what you have said means a lot to me! And you are 100 per cent correct: water WOULD ruin that beautiful, sequined dress! š Let me add that to the list of perils upon her journey... š

Indie folk is a genre I tend to avoid. It's amazing how well they turn prompts into good songs. ā”
LKN š 9w ago
Yes, I feared the community might boycott me from here on out if I did TWO banjo songs in a row š -- so I do think my going for "banjolele" instead made all the difference here. I do understand what you're saying about "folk" -- yet it's actually a huge genre. Likewise, I prompted for "folk rock" on this one -- again, even that alone makes a big difference. Thanks so much for simply listening to something I'm guessing that you thought you might not like!

Huge thanks to LKN š for letting us hear such a beautiful song. I listened to several versions in a row, and this oneās still my favorite. Your music always teaches me so much ā¤ļøš
LKN š 9w ago
Thank you so much, Mark! I think you're referring to other available versions of "Oh! Susanne"? While some of them are truly beautiful (like James Taylor's), they are still stripped of most of the original, intense drama that Stephen Foster wished for his song to embody. I'm honored to be able to help correct that!

Thank you. It's an instrument I both own and love. I feel it drives this song along like the "little train that thought it could..." "I think I can, I think I can...." It's a children's song about a train with a small engine. It gives itself a pep talk, as it pushes itself uphill.
