[Male Lead] He came back home at close of day, His little girl was waiting there. He kissed his children's fears away, And held their fragile world with care. He knew the darkness frightened his son, He knew the dreams his daughter dreamed. He loved them more than anyone, And life was kinder than it seemed. [Female Lead] But every morning, at his desk, The lists of names were waiting still. He signed the orders, line by line, And called obedience his will. He never heard the children's cries, He never saw the final train. He turned away his tired eyes, And never questioned others' pain. [Male Lead] He trusted duty, law and state, Believed that orders must be right. He never thought that someone’s fate Could disappear beneath his pen at night. [Female Lead] But can a law make murder just? Can duty wash the blood away? When frightened children turn to us, Who answers when we look away? [Male Lead] Is being human just to love? But killers love their children too. They guard the ones they're dreaming of, While strangers vanish from their view. [Female Lead] Is being human just to care? Compassion fades behind closed doors. But humanity begins right there, Where someone else's life is yours. [Male Lead] One man believed that duty came before The lives of those he never knew. Another opened up his door And sheltered someone others would pursue. [Female Lead] And if tomorrow brings a law That says some lives are worth much less, Will we obey without a thought, Or hear the voice of our conscience? [Male Lead] There are no strangers' children, There are no strangers' tears. No law can make their suffering Disappear across the years. [Female Lead] There are no strangers' children, No distant lives to throw away. No flag, no cause, no promise Can make their dying right someday. [Male Lead] And now the paper lies before me, Another name, another life. I know what they will do to me If I refuse to sign tonight. [Female Lead] There is a line beyond all fear, Beyond the power of command. The voice of conscience whispers here: A human life is in your hands. [Male Lead] I push the paper from my sight. Let them demand their answer now. I will not sign away a life. I will not make that final vow. [Male Lead, Female Lead] There are no strangers' children, There are no strangers' tears. Humanity begins within us When we refuse to live by fear. [Children's Choir] No child belongs to strangers. No child is born to die. [Female Lead] Let morning find another life... [Male Lead] Let one more heart survive... [Children's Choir] And somewhere, Someone's little girl Will wake up... [Male Lead, Female Lead, Children's Choir] Will wake up...
