I was a gardener at a small resort Renting cabins by the week. Just cleaning up the planter After another season peaked. Someone said—what you doing? I said—Not a lot Just smoothing out the dirt Of people’s favorite spot. Guess he thought I was kidding What with the sand and volleyball. I said—for some it doesn’t take that much To enjoy it all. The secret of having a good time Doesn’t cost a thousand dollars a week It’s finding opportunities, I said, Just to be free This may look like just a patch of dirt to you Where maybe lawn should be But this is where memories are made And these memories are free This is where the children play When the parents just want peace This is where the eye pretends Where imagination reigns And a plastic toy becomes a beast This is where the frogs play And end their day Croaking guests to sleep When they’ve gone I find the toy cars Mason jars, Little trucks and the occasional jeep Where the fun is born Nobody gets hurt And kingdoms are built From this little patch of dirt. That’s my lesson from life Avoid the strife Look for the simple pleasures When real fun is free, these will be The moments you remember. This is where the children play When the parents just want peace This is where the eye pretends Where imagination reigns And a plastic toy becomes a beast This is where the frogs play And end their day Croaking guests to sleep When they’ve gone I find the toy cars Mason jars, Little trucks and the occasional jeep Where the fun is born Nobody gets hurt And kingdoms are built From this little patch of dirt. From this little patch of dirt.
