I'll Try

[Intro — spoken, low] “Hey, man. Just checking in.” Nothing dramatic. Just checking in. Sometimes that's how you keep somebody from disappearing. [Verse 1] Haven't heard your voice in a couple days, so I figured I'd send a message your way. You said, “Yeah, just dealing with some things.” Funny how four words can hide a thousand things. I said, “Be wise, man. Make good choices. You gotta live humble sometimes.” You said you're trying to do better. Had a good interview today. And for a minute, that was enough. No sermon. No questions. No pretending everything's fine. Just— “Good hearing from you.” [Chorus — melodic] I can't fix it. You can't fix me. Maybe that's alright. You don't need an answer, you don't need a guarantee. Just somebody saying, “I got you tonight.” If the road gets heavy, if you don't know what to do— You don't have to make it beautiful. Just make it through. I said, “Anything I can do?” You said, “Unless you're magic.” I said, “I'll try.” [Verse 2 — conscious rap] You said, “I'm so fucking dead.” I said, “Why?” “Too much chasing kids.” And there's a whole life inside that little sentence. Responsibility. Exhaustion. Love. Bills. Plans. Things that don't go according to plan. I asked, “So you got the kids?” “For now. I'm struggling.” That's honest. No performance. And maybe that's the first step when the ground gets unstable— saying, “I'm struggling,” before the struggle becomes your whole identity. I said, “Hang in there, man. Anything I can do?” You laughed: “Unless you're magic.” No, brother. I'm not magic. I don't have the answer you've been waiting for. But I can answer the phone. I can ask again tomorrow. I can remind you there's still something ahead worth getting through today for. [Chorus] I can't fix it. You can't fix me. Maybe that's alright. You don't need an answer, you don't need a guarantee. Just somebody saying, “I got you tonight.” If the road gets heavy, if you don't know what to do— You don't have to make it beautiful. Just make it through. You said, “Unless you're magic.” I said, “I'll try.” [Bridge — stripped down] Maybe friendship isn't rescue. Maybe it's witness. It's saying: “I see you're hurting.” And not running because you can't make it stop. It's asking what the plan is when there isn't one. It's saying, “Have fun,” when all you really mean is, “Please take care of yourself.” And sometimes— that's enough. [Verse 3 — building] You've got the kids all day. Maybe work a little. Maybe hang out with some girls. Life keeps moving even when your head doesn't. So I tell you, “Have fun.” You say, “I'll try.” Two words. But I hear the weight inside them. Because sometimes “I'll try” isn't casual. Sometimes it's a promise you make when you don't trust yourself to make a bigger one. So I'll take it. You don't have to promise forever. You don't have to prove you're changed. Just keep making the next good choice you can make. I'll be over here doing the same. [Final Chorus — layered] I can't fix it. You can't fix me. Maybe that's alright. You don't need an answer, you don't need a guarantee. Just somebody saying, “I got you tonight.” If the road gets heavy, if you don't know what to do— You don't have to make it beautiful. Just make it through. You said, “Unless you're magic.” I said, “I'll try.” [Outro — spoken] No magic. No miracle. Just two friends checking in. One saying, “I'm struggling.” The other saying, “I'm here.” And sometimes that's enough to get somebody to tomorrow.
