DUST WITH HOPE Verse 1 Saw this bloke in a suit on the morning train,
Saw another one sleeping in the pouring rain.
One's got meetings, one's got cans,
Both trying hard to be the bigger man. Man's got mortgage, one's proper skint,
One can't shake things he don't like to think.
He says grace, they swear loud,
Same dark thoughts, when they're alone in a crowd. Truth is none of us deserved a seat,
Kings and beggars dragging dusty feet.
Some wear gold, some wear pain,
Same cold ground when it starts to rain. Everybody's carrying something broke.
We're all just dust carrying hope. Verse 2 Funny how the posh pub's got one door,
Funny how the rough pub's got one an' all.
Funny how both are full Friday night
Of blokes convinced they've got life right. Never met a family that didn't have rows,
Never met a road that didn't have potholes.
Never met a saint that weren't a mess before,
Makes you wonder what all the judging's for. Give it six pints. Give it half a year.
Give it one mistake and the truth appears.
Everybody's solid till the cracks all show.
Funny what you find when the lights go low. Hook Dust with hope.
That's all we are.
Dust with hope.
Looking up at stars. Brick by brick.
Heart by heart.
Nobody built themselves from the start. Door was shut
'Fore mercy spoke.
Now we're all just
Dust with hope. Brick by brick.
Side by side.
Not because we earned some right. Rich one, poor one.
Weak one, strong.
Same beat.
Same song. [instrumental lift] Verse 3 Saw a bloke shouting at the telly 'bout the state of the nation,
Then saw him blank his own mum at the station.
Bloke says money solves every little thing,
Same bloke's got it all but still can't sleep. Funny how the richest always wants more,
Funny how the poorest one shares all he's got.
A man on the breadline buys his mate a round,
Seen men lose everything and still stand their ground. Saw a lad swear blind he'd never need help,
Three months later couldn't lift himself.
Life's got a funny way of evening the score.
Makes you wonder what all the boasting's for. Verse 4 Saw an old boy feeding gulls by the sea,
Flask by his side, flat cap on his knee.
Said, "You'll spend years trying to get somewhere else,
Then wake up wishing you'd known yourself." Said, "I've buried mates. I've buried dreams.
Most things ain't quite what they seem.
Best thing I learned after all these years?
Everybody's carrying doubts and fears." Train rolled in, he stood and smiled.
Looked like he'd carried a mountain for miles.
Never saw him again but I still hear him say: "We're all just dust carrying hope." Final Hook Dust with hope.
That's all we are.
Dust with hope.
Looking up at stars.Brick by brick.
Heart by heart.
Nobody built themselves from the start.Door was shut
'Fore mercy spoke.
Now we're all just
Dust with hope.Brick by brick.
Side by side.
Not because we earned some right.Rich one, poor one.
Weak one, strong.
Same beat.
Same song. [Music strips back...] Everybody's carrying something broke... [pause] We're all just dust carrying hope. [End.]
