i threw my childhood in the dirt and called it self-defense i learned to laugh when things got bad because crying made no sense everybody's getting older but nobody says goodbye we just disappear a little every time we close our eyes POCKET SAND! POCKET SAND! the driveway cracks beneath the weeds the porch light still burns blue i swear i hear the old lawn mower like nothing ever moved the alley holds our shadows where we used to waste the night talking like we'd never leave underneath the buzzing light i threw my childhood in the dirt and called it self-defense i learned to laugh when things got bad because crying made no sense everybody's getting older but nobody says goodbye we just disappear a little every time we close our eyes POCKET SAND! POCKET SAND! i thought that growing older meant finally knowing why but every answer that i found just gave me more to hide the street looks almost identical but somehow feels too small i know every crack in every curb and still don't know myself at all i used to think the future was a place i'd finally reach now i'm standing in my driveway with the past beneath my feet i threw my childhood in the dirt and called it self-defense i learned to laugh when things got bad because crying made no sense everybody's getting older but nobody says goodbye we just disappear a little every time we close our eyes POCKET SAND! POCKET SAND! maybe home was never somewhere maybe home was who we were before we learned to call it growing up before the memories started to blur so if you see me driving with the windows down at night i'm not trying to get somewhere i'm just trying to get it right i threw my childhood in the dirt and called it self-defense i learned to laugh when things got bad because crying made no sense everybody's getting older but nobody says goodbye we just disappear a little every time we close our eyes POCKET SAND! POCKET SAND! POCKET SAND!
