Fear wore many faces when I first got clean. Some loud, some quiet, some hiding between. Fear of the night and the thoughts it would bring. Fear of feeling everything. EVERY DAMN THING. Fear said, “You can’t do this without what you use.” Whispers of comfort, of shortcuts, of truths misconstrued. It dressed up as logic, as memory as need. But I learned fear can lie with convincing speed. My mind, my body acting in fight or flight. Chasing the shadows, laughing at danger at night. Sleep came in pieces, peace felt thin. And fear knocked daily, pleading to come in. Some days it looked like anger, some days like doubt. Some days like silence, I couldn’t talk about. It crept into restlessness, tightened my chest. Showed up as cravings disguised as, “just stress.” But I stayed. I breathed. I named it aloud. I chose not to listen to fear when it got loud. I learned fear isn’t failure, and it’s not a sign to run. It’s a nervous system healing, learning how to be done. Done with escaping, done with the lie. That relief only comes if I’m willing to die. I learned healthy fear keeps my feet on the ground. Points out the warning signs when they come around. But unhealthy fear wants to grip the wheel tight. Driving me backwards convincing me night is my light. So I redirect. I pray. I tell someone the truth. I remember my why when fear steals my proof. I trust God with outcomes I can’t control. I showed up imperfect and he made me whole. I work on my thinking, my body, my soul. Fear NO more! God showed me my role. And my role is this: To stay. To choose. To grow. To not let fear decide where I go. Fear may walk with me, but it doesn’t decide. Recovery lives where honesty and courage collide. And everyday I choose healing, connection, and light. I prove to myself I’m stronger than fright. I am not cured. I am not done But I am becoming. And today, I won.
