A Message On The Mirror

V5.5

I worked at being lost A thousand ways to disappear No bags to pack, no notes to leave Just a message on the mirror Leaning into silence I breathed in empty air Hiding from the street noise That welcomed me there Maybe I was bored I usually don't know Doesn’t really matter Until it’s time to go Might have been tired I just couldn’t tell But the mirror was smiling And wishing me well Believers flock to crowded places Fill them up with vicious faces I’d rather toss a skipping stone Into a lake from dark to dawn Than to stand in line for hours Neath the bells of wooden towers Proclaiming to the beginners The holy mission of every sinner I danced to music That flooded the roof Watched painters in the alley Heard poets on the stoops The rhythms all stopped The artists went blind The magic of the poets Faded from their lines I was tired and bored Of people with nothing to say It was easy to decide It was time to get away I caught a twisting wind A tornado straight from hell Roaring past the mirror That was wishing me well Believers flock to sacred places Then fill them up with tragic faces I’d rather toss a skipping stone Into a lake no map has known Than stand in someone else’s line Clutching a ticket by my side
