They gave Me blue eyes and pale white skin Though I was born olive-toned to begin Then they moved the day I was born To rival feasts where pagan gods were sworn Took the tool of My torture, a cruel and wicked thing And covered it with jewels to turn it into bling They wear it on their necks, put it in their parades Almost always forgetting the promises that I made It’s not about a book, it’s not just about the words You’re missing the point, if this is all you’ve heard It’s not about you, or rewards that you’ll receive It’s about every one of us and that, [pause here] you can believe They tried to write Me out of history, claim I didn’t exist and put Me in the pile of their most feared and hated myths Yet still the love I left them, confuses to this day They cling to earthly things that always go away They twisted what I said, left entire volumes out They burned what didn’t fit, sewing fear and doubt Made it all about control, have you ever wondered why My Mother is a virgin and my Father’s in the sky? It’s not about a book, it’s not just about the words You’re missing the point, if this is all you’ve heard It’s not about you, or rewards that you’ll receive It’s about every one of us and that, [pause here] you can believe If you’re waiting for My kingdom, it’s already arrived I left it right there for you, on the very day I died. What’s wrong in your world can all be healed by you Though it may take generations, only one will do It’s not about a book, it’s not just about the words You’re missing the point, if this is all you’ve heard It’s not about you, or rewards that you’ll receive It’s about every one of us and that, [pause here] you can believe [spoken word with emphasis] …the kingdom is inside you and it is outside you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living Father. Gospel of Thomas (logion 3, 77)
