The Devouring Machine
We leave out the hearts and minds, Cast votes against the poor as we shop for pity at the stores, We hold no remorse for what is left behind, No fragrant beauty or silver line, We gnash and gnaw at the sky Always Believing we are right, We hold on to what is still, Auctioning and borrowing our will, Dying and remembering every hill, We murder at the cost but dare not speak of what we kill, We are all insane but never ill, We profess and profane the guilt of others gains We explain our grievances, our wrongs, in myths of undoing, We spin tales of our rights, but dare not speak of our wrongs, We hale what is new but fail to remember what is gone, We see the task ahead and feel pride in what is done, Without ever whispering the sorrows we’ve sung,
