MERCY 007 – Ledger of the Unnamed | The Mercy
(Verse 1) They raised a Witness House where broken school bells tolled, In a Midwest town of ash, where October streets grew cold. They found the first survivor names by candle, cord, and light, And wrote them on the ledger through the starving edge of night. (Verse 2) They searched through deadened phones for faces stored in glass, And opened cracked old wallets where the vanished used to pass. From school rolls, tags, and medicine, they gathered every name, Refusing that the pale and lost be swallowed by the flame. (Chorus) So the Ledger of the Unnamed held the living and the gone, Where the guilty hands of survivors kept the memory moving on. Not chosen, not forgiven, still they answered to the dead, And counted every silent one whose final colour fled. (Verse 3) They marked the missing softly when no body could be found, And named the Paled in doorways, fields, and houses burned around. A mother spoke a daughter’s name, then could not speak again, While witnesses stood waiting with their ink against the pain. (Verse 4) They copied birth and marriage lines from counties now erased, And pinned old hospital bracelets to a board of names and place. The ledger gave no comfort and no reason for the light, But kept each broken human from dissolving into night. (Chorus) So the Ledger of the Unnamed held the living and the gone, Where the guilty hands of survivors kept the memory moving on. Not chosen, not forgiven, still they answered to the dead, And counted every silent one whose final colour fled. (Bridge) They learned a name could shelter more than walls against the rain, And false witness was a murder done without a wound or stain. Where ash roads crossed the empty grain, their record stood as law, A fragile human answer to the silence that they saw. (Outro) Now every autumn candle finds the pages worn and thin, Where the living read the absent, and the missing enter in. They cannot save the world before, or judge the mercy shown, But no one known to memory shall face the dark alone.
