We'll set a place beside the fire and pour a drink for you. Our fields grow green, our wells run clear, our windows glow at night. The world outside may have its troubles, but here we've got things right. [Verse 1 – dark acoustic folk, harpsichord] When winter breaks a neighbour's roof, we help them set it right. We bring the sick a bowl of soup and sit with them at night. The harvest comes in heavy carts, the little ones grow strong. And if you ask why things go well, we'll teach you our old song. [Pre-Chorus – gentle rhythm building] When autumn drops its final leaf, the last carts leave the town. We light the lanterns in the square as evening settles down. It's how our fathers kept the peace, it's what their fathers knew. If something's served us all these years, why change what we do? [Chorus – cheerful, powerful village choir, stomping folk rhythm] We're the good folk of Hollow Creek, our doors are open wide. Three hundred sixty-four days of peace, one night we set aside. No need to ask, no need to doubt, it's what our fathers knew. We're the good folk of Hollow Creek, we do what good folk do. [Verse 2 – playful harpsichord, lively dark folk] The tables stretch across the square, the fiddles play all night. The children spin around the fire, the windows glow with light. The mayor makes his yearly speech, then takes the box in hand. His family's names are in there too. We hope you understand. [Pre-Chorus – music grows darker] No family holds a better place, no one can buy their way. He draws a slip, he reads a name, and no one looks away. For one brief breath the square goes still, then laughter fills the air. The chosen one receives a toast from all assembled there. [Chorus – cheerful village choir, increasingly sinister] We're the good folk of Hollow Creek, our doors are open wide. Three hundred sixty-four days of peace, one night we set aside. No need to ask, no need to doubt, it's what our fathers knew. We're the good folk of Hollow Creek, we do what good folk do. [Verse 3 – slower, dark cello and harpsichord] We take them down behind the mill, beyond the willow trees. We bring a blanket, bread and water against the autumn breeze. We turn the key and leave them there, then head back through the night. The bell rings out, the fiddles start, the square is warm and bright. [Bridge – sparse harpsichord, almost whispered] When strangers ask about the house beyond the willow tree, we say it's empty, change the subject, and offer them some tea. And does it truly keep us safe? Well, none of us can say. But no one's keen to take the chance and put the box away. [Instrumental – unsettling solo harpsichord, gradually joined by stomping feet and distant voices] [Final Chorus – joyful, loud village choir, dark folk celebration] We're the good folk of Hollow Creek, our doors are open wide. Three hundred sixty-four days of peace, one night we set aside. No need to ask, no need to doubt, it's what our fathers knew. We're the good folk of Hollow Creek, we do what good folk do. [all sings louder] We're the good folk of Hollow Creek, our doors are open wide. Three hundred sixty-four days of peace, one night we set aside. No need to ask, no need to doubt, it's what our fathers knew. We're the good folk of Hollow Creek, we do what good folk do. [The village choir returns, soft and cheerful, accompanied by the opening harpsichord melody] [End]
