There was a boy named Schrödinger Who loved a girl so fair He told his cat about her As it sat upon a chair “She smiled at me on Monday Then Tuesday passed me by She laughed when I was talking Then would not meet my eye” “I do not know if she loves me Or if she hates my soul Each time I think about her heart I lose all self-control” The cat remained in silence And flicked its tail askew Which Schrödinger decided meant “Both answers may be true” If I never tell her Then love and hate are true She may adore me dearly She may despise me too Until I open up the box And let confession through She loves me and she hates me And both of them are true “To many this sounds foolish But a secret works like that Unspoken, it keeps hope alive” He argued to his cat “She might reject me cruelly And laugh at all my pain Or fall into my waiting arms And call my fear insane” “What hurts the most,” he whispered “And fills my heart with dread Is knowing she might hate me Before a word is said” “But then again, consider My theory, oh so clever Unless I share my feelings She could love me on forever” If I never tell her Then love and hate are true She may adore me dearly She may despise me too Until I open up the box And let confession through She loves me and she hates me And both of them are true He paced around the parlor With diagrams and tea He drew a heart, a question mark And labeled both as “she” The cat looked at the papers Then scratched behind one ear Which Schrödinger interpreted As, “Your thinking’s very clear” “So I shall keep my secret Locked safely in my chest For certainty is dangerous And guessing might be best” “She cannot break my heart apart If I refuse to know So love remains alive in theory And forever it may grow” If I never tell her Then love and hate are true She may adore me dearly She may despise me too Until I open up the box And let confession through She loves me and she hates me And both of them are true His cat eyed him suspiciously With unmistakable disdain It cocked its head as if to say “You’re really quite insane”
