Spring Came to My Heart The mirror asked me softly, “Where are you going today? Are you going to meet your beloved, All dressed in such a way?” Today you trimmed your beard Not once, but even twice; It seems you want to set Some brand-new record tonight. I said, “O mirror, listen, Just give your good wishes to me; Let no evil eye touch this heart, Ask not so curiously.” The mirror smiled and answered, “My prayer I will surely say; But first you must tell me — Where are you going today? What purpose fills your footsteps? Why seek a prayer from me? What longing fills your heart As you go so eagerly?” ⸻ If I Should Refuse to Pray What if I refuse to pray Because you may do something wrong? Tell me truthfully today — Are you meeting your beloved? The one you saw in dreams each day, Today you finally meet; For the first time face to face Your heart you must repeat. Ah, what a blessed moment! Just make no foolish mistake; Let me give a little advice For your own dear heart’s sake. Do not scatter things in haste, Walk there calm and slow; Speak the truth within your heart, But do not boast or show. ⸻ A Very Special Day Today is such a special day — Do not make her sad; Tell me quickly what you’ll say, Don’t waste time you have. That day the mirror told me, “Show no pride in your talk; Speak with love and gentleness To that future bride of thine.” Laughing then I asked the mirror, “Since when are you my brother?” It replied, “There’s no time to talk — Now quickly go and meet her.” Do not try to act too clever, Do not falsely pretend; Speak the truth that lives within, And listen to what she says. ⸻ When Hearts Finally Met Greet her gently with your hand, Speak the words you feel; Be humble in your manner, Let honesty be real. My prayer will surely blossom, Fate will stand with you; One day she will proudly be My sister-in-law too. Taking all these gentle words, I went to meet my love; With just a single glance at her My heart was lost above. In those deer-like shining eyes I slowly drifted deep; When sweets and samosas came I hardly noticed a thing. I drowned within her loving heart, She rested in my arms; When two hearts met together Spring bloomed with all its charms. ⸻
