[Verse 1] The last plate left the table At a quarter after nine Your mother took the pie back home We waved beneath the porch light The roasting pan was soaking There was gravy on my cuff You turned the kitchen radio And said, we've cleaned enough [Pre-Chorus] I set the towel on the chair You held your hand out halfway there [Chorus] Two-step past the Christmas dishes Hold me in that kitchen light We can leave a few things soaking There's still Christmas left tonight Slide your socks across the floor Turn me once, then one time more Two-step past the Christmas dishes That's the gift I'm wishing for [Verse 2] I nearly stepped into the dog bowl You caught my sleeve beside the chair The dog looked up, then went back sleeping As if we'd always danced in there We made one loop around the table Then another, heel to toe When the song had reached its ending We kept dancing soft and slow [Chorus] Two-step past the Christmas dishes Hold me in that kitchen light We can leave a few things soaking There's still Christmas left tonight Slide your socks across the floor Turn me once, then one time more Two-step past the Christmas dishes That's the gift I'm wishing for [Instrumental - fiddle and piano, eight bars] [Bridge] At last we drained the roasting pan And stacked the plates beside the sink You said, that's quite enough for now Then turned the music up again [Final Chorus] Two-step past the Christmas dishes Hold me in that kitchen light We can leave a few things soaking There's still Christmas left tonight Slide your socks across the floor Turn me once, then one time more Two-step past the Christmas dishes That's the gift I'm wishing for [Outro] The cups were dry by half past ten I asked if we could start again.
