[Verse 1] We were bound with rope and shame Three names in a king’s bad room Shadrach in the dust Meshach with a calm-eyed stare And me, Bendigo, with ash in my teeth Heard the furnace before we saw it Like summer chewing iron [Pre-Chorus] They said kneel We said no They said burn We said still The night stood up around us And the fire showed its hand [Chorus] Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo (Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo) We walked in bare and slow We walked where the hot winds go Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo (Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo) The rope fell off below But the flame did not take hold [Verse 2] I remember my brother’s breath Hot as a mule on the run The king looked small in his gold When the doors swung wide for us No prayer ever sounded like this No grave ever opened so bright We stepped through the mouth of it Like men with a borrowed night [Pre-Chorus] They said kneel We said no They said die We said go The floor was red as wrath And the sky leaned in to watch [Chorus] Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo (Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo) We walked in bare and slow We walked where the hot winds go Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo (Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo) The rope fell off below But the flame did not take hold [Bridge] There was another in the fire Not a scar on any soul He stood there in the furnace Like mercy with a pulse So if you ask me what I saw I saw fear turn into dust I saw the proud man lose his crown And I saw the faithful keep their blood [Final Chorus] Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo (Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo) We walked in bare and slow We walked where the hot winds go Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo (Shadrach Meshach and a Bendigo) We came out smelling whole And the flame did not take hold
