[Verse 1] You called to ask where I bought that lamp Because yours finally stopped working We talked for thirteen minutes About bulbs Delivery Nothing important Then you asked if I still take tea the same I said yes You said, “Thought so” And suddenly there was a whole old relationship Sitting quietly inside two words [Chorus] Nothing important That’s what we always call it When something gets too close To where the real feeling is Nothing important Just your voice Just my name Just both of us refusing To say why neither hung up Nothing important Except apparently everything [Verse 2] You mentioned the weather where you are I mentioned mine As if clouds required comparison We avoided names Avoided history Avoided asking whether either one was happy Excellent work Very mature Almost convincing [Bridge] There are conversations That look tiny from outside No declarations No crying No dramatic ending Just one person saying “Anyway, take care” And another person needing Five seconds too long To say it back [Final Chorus] Nothing important Just an ordinary call Just an ordinary silence After neither said it all Nothing important I put the phone back down And spent the rest of the evening Thinking about nothing Nothing Nothing Nothing important [Outro — ascending breathy run] Mm-mm-mm-mm Nothing at all
