[Rubato Intro] Somewhere before dawn While the city sleeps There’s a little piece of night The morning never keeps [Verse 1] The tables are empty The candles burn low A cab passes slowly On the street down below You turn to the window I look at the time There’s nothing to hold us But your hand close to mine [Verse 2] The rain has stopped falling The room has grown still A pale light is waiting Just over the hill We don’t speak of leaving We don’t ask how long We’re somewhere before dawn Where nothing feels wrong [Chorus] Somewhere before dawn Somewhere out of time The night is still yours And your hand is still mine No promise to carry No words to hold on Just stay here beside me Somewhere before dawn [Instrumental Interlude] (Piano and upright bass exchange the melody freely; soft brushes keep an elastic pulse) [Verse 3] Soon doors will be opening And trains start to run The rooftops will gather The first of the sun Perhaps by tomorrow This night will be gone But I’ll still remember Somewhere before dawn [Final Chorus] Somewhere before dawn Somewhere out of time The night was still yours And your hand was still mine No promise forever No reason to mourn We had one quiet moment Somewhere before dawn [Outro] Somewhere before dawn… (Long piano and melodic upright bass conversation; brushes gradually disappear)
