Waiting in the Doctor's Office

V6

White walls and a paper gown, Clock hands crawling upside down, Fluorescent lights are humming low, Everybody's waiting to know. A magazine from years ago, A television running slow, Names get called, the hallway clears, But I've been sitting here for years. I've counted every ceiling tile, Watched that second hand for miles, Tried to read the words upon the wall, Anything to make the waiting small. [Chorus] I'm waiting in the doctor's office, Waiting for somebody to say What all these numbers and pictures mean, And whether I'll be okay. I'm waiting for an answer, I'm waiting for a sign, Trying not to wonder What's going on inside. The clock keeps moving forward, But I feel frozen in place— I'm waiting in the doctor's office, Waiting to hear my name. [Verse 2] There's a mother with a little boy, A man staring at his phone, An old woman holding paperwork And pretending she's alone. We all came in with questions, We all carry something in, And nobody knows the story Of the person sitting next to them. The nurse walks through the doorway, Calls a name and disappears. For a moment I can feel my heartbeat Louder than the gears. I tell myself, "Don't worry." I tell myself, "Be still." But fear has got a funny way Of ignoring what you will. [Bridge] Maybe the answer will be simple. Maybe it won't be what I fear. Maybe I'll walk out of this room And breathe a little easier. But until that moment comes, I'm somewhere between the known and unknown, Sitting underneath these hospital lights, Trying to remember— I'm more than a diagnosis. I'm more than a chart. I'm more than what the doctor Finds inside my heart. [Verse 3] The door opens. "Mr. White?" And suddenly the room gets quiet. I stand up a little slower Than I used to when I came. I gather up my questions, Gather up my courage too, Because whatever waits behind that door, I know I've got to walk into it. Maybe I don't control the answer. Maybe I never did. But I can choose to face tomorrow Like the man who made it through this. [Final Chorus] I'm leaving the doctor's office, Maybe carrying something new— An answer, or another question, Or another thing to do. I was waiting for a verdict, But life isn't finished yet. The clock kept moving forward, And somehow so did I. I was waiting for my name, Waiting for someone to tell me What comes next. But maybe that's all life is: Waiting. Wondering. Breathing. And taking the next step. [Outro] White walls. Paper gown. Clock hands turning. Door opens. My name is called. I get up. And I go.
