Why Do You Need an Observer?
[Verse 1] I sat beneath the bright white light, The paper gown so thin and tight. She said, “Now please, uncover there,” And I tried not to show my stare. It’s hard to feel like more than skin When walls are white and air feels thin. I told myself, “This must be care,” And trusted I’d be safe right there. [Chorus] Then she opened the door, said, “Someone will see, It’s just our rule, it’s not about me.” I asked, “Why now, when I’m bare as can be?” She said, “It’s protocol, you see.” But it sounded strange, it sounded wrong— That trust needs witnesses to belong. And I sang in my head, uncertain and scared— Why do you need an observer there? [Verse 2] A stranger stood beside the wall, I didn’t know their name at all. No greeting came, no reason told, Just quiet eyes and air so cold. My questions echoed in the room, Half-lost beneath fluorescent gloom. If care is trust, and trust is fair, Then why this watcher standing there? [Chorus] She said, “It’s just procedure, dear, A way to keep all stories clear.” But privacy can’t feel complete With unseen footsteps near my feet. And though her tone was soft and kind, It left a question in my mind— Is comfort real, or just declared? Why do you need an observer there? [Bridge] If healing means I must comply, Then honesty should meet my eye. Don’t call it care if it’s not shared— Don’t guard your trust while mine is bared. [Final Verse] The moment passed, the door was closed, My gown was folded, my breathing slowed. But somewhere still inside that glare, A question lingers in the air. Not anger now, just quiet despair— Why did you need an observer there?
