Not Famous Yet
[Intro — easy acoustic guitar, playful piano] Lady stopped me at the grocery store, Asked if I'd sign her hat. I came home feeling pretty important. Daddy said, That's nice. Feed the cat. [Verse 1] There's a picture of me somewhere On a magazine this week. Mama bought three copies— Then hid two So I wouldn't get a swollen head, I think. Phone's been ringing since the finale. There's people asking where I'll play. But Billy yelled upstairs this morning, Chloe, get yer laundry outta the way! I said, Do ya know who I am? He said, Unfortunately, yes. So apparently nationwide attention Doesn't travel to this address. [Chorus] I ain't famous yet! No matter what the papers say. Famous girls don't muck out stalls Before they've had breakfast for the day. Famous girls don't wash the dishes. Famous girls don't sweep the steps. I've got people asking for me autograph— But I'm not famous yet. Got a record deal in Nashville, Got homework I ain't finished yet. America might know me name— But I ain't famous yet. [Verse 2] Went down into town on Tuesday. Three folks asked me for a picture. Mrs. Carter hugged me twice And said she'd voted every night. Mr. Bell down at the hardware store Said, Saw ya on the television. Then he handed me the change and asked, Yer daddy still need that transmission? That's Vermont. Ya win a television show, Come home beneath a shower of lights, And someone who has known ya since age four Says, You've gotten tall, right? [Pre-Chorus] There's fan mail on the table. There's a contract by the phone. There's a horse outside the window Who could not care less at all. [Chorus] I ain't famous yet! Mama says to make me bed. Daddy says a trophy doesn't mean I get to leave the chickens unfed. Alton stole me fancy sunglasses. Billy wears me backstage pass. I said, Those things could be worth money! He said, Not with yer face on 'em. [spoken] I live among savages. [Verse 3 — softer] Truth is... I kinda like it. Out there everybody knows The girl they saw beneath the spotlights In the pretty television clothes. They know the song. They know the smile. They know the moment that I won. But they don't know I hate tomatoes, Or I sleep till nearly one. They don't know which stairboard creaks. They don't know my horse's name. They don't remember me at seven Singing badly in the rain. Here nobody asks permission Before they mess up me hair. And nobody treats Chloe Quinn Like someone different standing there. [Bridge — piano, intimate vocal] Maybe fame is something waiting Five miles past the county line. Maybe it'll catch me someday. Maybe I'll decide that's fine. But tonight Mama's making supper. Daddy's boots are by the door. Billy's yelling something stupid. Alton's yelling something more. And there's somewhere in Los Angeles A stranger wearing my face on a shirt. While the actual girl she's wearing Is outside... Shoveling dirt. [pause] Horse dirt. Let's be accurate. [Final Chorus — full band, bright and warm] I ain't famous yet! And maybe that's alright! I can sing for half the country Then come home the same night. Put the trophy on the mantel! Put the good dress on the shelf! If everybody else wants Chloe Quinn, They can have her— I'll keep myself. I've got songs they wanna hear now. Got a whole wide world ahead. But Daddy's hollering from downstairs— [Daddy] CHLOE! [Chloe] WHAT?! [Daddy] Trash. [Chloe] ...right. I ain't famous yet. [Outro — acoustic guitar, laughing vocal] Maybe when the album's platinum. Maybe when I'm twenty-three. Maybe when they put my name in lights From here to Tennessee. I'll walk into this kitchen In designer clothes and private jets— [Billy] Yer plate's in the sink. [Chloe] Yeah. Never mind. I ain't gettin' famous here.
