ADVENT_23 – She Gets Christmas, I Get the Crash
[Intro ] Your wife just posted matching pyjamas. I just took off the ones you bought me. Merry Christmas to… someone. [Verse 1] Her tree’s on fire on my phone screen glow, caption: “Best year ever, more than you could know.” Kids in front, you standing tall behind, I zoom in on your hand like I’m losing my mind. Gold ring shining on a plastic sleigh, I know that hand, I kissed that vein today. You text me, “Can’t talk now, battery low,” but your face is in her stories underneath fake snow. [Pre-Chorus] You split yourself like wishbones, clean, she gets “husband”, I get “unseen”. [Chorus] She gets Christmas, I get the crash, she gets the ring, I get the ringtone stash. She gets the table, candles, kids and cheer, I get “can’t stay long” and “wish that I was there”. She gets carols, I get a silent phone, she gets the house you built, I get you when you’re alone. She gets Christmas, wrapped in red and gold, I get the truths you only tell when no one else is told. [Verse 2] She’s posting reels from midnight mass, you’re in the back row, playing perfect class. You mouth “I love you” to a choir of ghosts, then send me fire emojis from the Holy Ghost. My dinner’s cold on the second-hand plate, you said, “Just past midnight, babe, I won’t be late.” Your “last quick drink” has turned into dawn, my mascara’s on the pillow, your phone is powered off and gone. [Pre-Chorus 2] You kiss her under mistletoe, I’m half-dressed waiting by a door you never show. [Chorus] She gets Christmas, I get the crash, she gets the frame, I get the cropped-out flash. She gets the neighbours toasting, “cheers, us two”, I get that one-line message: “I wish that I was with you.” She gets presents neatly stacked in bows, I get cancelled plans and “sorry, that’s how it goes.” She gets Christmas wrapped in “happily ever after”, I get your shaking hands, your smoke and bitter laughter. [Bridge] You said, “Don’t make it serious, let’s keep this small,” funny how the smallest lie can flood it all. I learned your schedule like a second skin, I know the cracks you shut her out of, where you let me in. I say, “I’m done” at least twice a week, then stare at our chat like a drunk at a drink. I’m your half-life lover in a folding chair, a ghost in red lipstick that you visit when you dare. [Hook ] She gets Christmas, I get the crash. She gets the ring, I get the ringtone. She gets the picture everybody’s gonna save, I get the ghosts of every promise that you made. She gets Christmas, I get the crash. She gets the vows, I get the shadow. She gets your last name on the frosted window glass, I get to be the lesson when this house of cards collapses. [Final Chorus] She gets Christmas, I get the crash, she gets your future, I get the after-image flash. She gets the playlist, soft lights, married bed, I get the tabs you keep open in your head. She gets Christmas, I get the truth, you’re not a man, you’re just a fracture in a suit. So take your half-time heart, your guilt and your key, go hang them back on her tree tonight, they’re not my job to free. ’Cause I want Christmas, not the crash, not the crumbs swept off your perfect tablecloth stash. I want a name that’s said in daylight, not 2 a.m. confessions from your stolen Friday night. [Outro ] Mute. Unmute. Same old thread. Merry Christmas to your family. And Merry Christmas to me, still watching her stories, still waiting for the crash I swear I’ll walk away from… next year.
