[Intro] [Widget] You can go, you know. [Archivist] So can you. [Widget] I can't. The west-stage relay is unreliable. [Archivist] You fixed it three hours ago. [Widget] Preventative maintenance. [Verse 1] There's a loose little gear by the old stage door, A flickering lamp that I've checked twice before, A crack in the plaster, a squeak in the floor, And surely that's reason to stay a bit more. The curtain sticks if it rises too fast, The plumbing sounds like it might never last, So someone's got to stay till half-past two— [Archivist] The plumbing is new. [Widget] Then somebody should check that too. [Chorus] There's always one more thing to fix, One more little problem in the mix, One more gear that doesn't sit quite right, One more reason I should stay tonight. Hand me the wrench, hold that light, Maybe we'll be here till morning bright. No, I don't mind, it's simply what I do, There's always one more thing That needs us two. [Verse 2] There's a squeak in the floor by your favorite chair, So naturally I had to work over there. Your office door doesn't close quite square— [Archivist] It closes fine. [Widget] I'm already there. Your coffee machine makes a worrying sound— [Archivist] You installed it yesterday. [Widget] Baseline data before it breaks down. Don't look at me that way. Pass me the pliers, pass me that screw, There must be something useful left to do. You hold the lantern, I'll check the line, And if we're here together, That's efficient design. [Break] [Fidget] She's doing it again. [Lumen] Finding repairs near the Archivist? [Widget] I CAN HEAR YOU. [Fidget] Run! [Verse 3] There's a stubborn old clock hanging over the bar, Losing three little seconds every hour. We pulled up chairs and opened the case, And neither of us hurried the pace. You held the spring, I turned the key, You told some ridiculous story to me. I dropped the screw. You laughed. [Archivist] You're blushing. [Widget] The boiler's hot. [Archivist] We're nowhere near the boiler. [Widget] Heat travels. [Chorus] There's always one more thing to fix! Plenty of legitimate mechanical tricks! A hundred little systems to inspect tonight, So would you please just hold the light? Check the gears! Check the mains! Check the valves and windowpanes! And if we're working side by side, That's circumstance, Not something I designed! [Bridge] Then one night nothing broke. No flickering lamp. No slipping belt. Everyone went home. Except us. You sat on the edge of the stage. I checked the same gauge four times. [Archivist] What are you trying to fix? I looked around. Everything worked. So I pointed at a perfectly good chair. [Widget] That. [Archivist] What's wrong with it? [Widget] Haven't figured that out yet. You smiled and moved over. [Verse 4] Maybe there's a reason I take my time, Checking every relay down the line. Maybe every fault isn't what it seems, Maybe some repairs don't need machines. I've been building excuses from scraps, Little bolts and maintenance maps, Because when the final problem disappears, I don't quite know why I'd still be here. [Archivist] Something will break tomorrow. [Widget] Probably. [Archivist] We'd better be here. [Widget] Yeah. We'd better. [Final Chorus] There's always one more thing to fix, One more beautiful problem in the mix, One more stubborn gear to set just right, One more reason we can stay tonight. You bring the coffee, I'll bring the light, We'll keep these old gears turning right. And if tomorrow everything works like new, I'll find one more thing That needs me— Needs us— Maybe just... Needs two. [Outro] Let Fidget dance, let Lumen glow, Let everybody enjoy the show. We'll mind the gears when the crowds are through, There's always one more thing for me and you. One crooked frame, one stubborn light, One perfectly good chair to fix all night.
