[Verse 1] The groundskeeper draws the lines at dawn White chalk on a diamond sleeping since the fall Just sparrows and the morning keeping watch He smooths the dirt like praying, like a promise he won't break [Pre-Chorus] Every team is zero-zero Every kid can dream out loud The air is thick with cut grass and beginning And there's magic in the crowd [Chorus] It's Opening Day, swing away The frost is gone, we made it through Opening Day, come what may We're all undefeated - me and you Crack of the bat like a starting gun The diamond catching April sun It's Opening Day, Opening Day And anything could happen now [Verse 2] My father brought me when the world was new Mustard on my shirt and heaven in my view He said, This feeling right here - hold it tight It ain't about the winning, it's about the April light [Pre-Chorus] Now my daughter's counting innings Same sun-faded seat, same sky She don't know that she's the reason I keep coming back to cry [Chorus] It's Opening Day, swing away The frost is gone, we made it through Opening Day, come what may We're all undefeated - me and you Crack of the bat like a starting gun The diamond catching April sun It's Opening Day, Opening Day And anything could happen now [Bridge] October broke us on the vine We watched the last hope die in rain But every spring we form the line Because the first pitch washes clean the stain The first pitch washes clean... [Final Chorus] It's Opening Day, SWING AWAY! The winter's buried in the ground! Opening Day, come what may! Three generations in this crowd! Crack of the bat - my father's ghost My daughter's eyes where his hope lives most It's Opening Day, Opening Day And anything could happen now! [Outro] Opening Day... Opening Day... And anything could happen now
