At midnight I unbound a book, And felt a thousand shadows look. A tapping sounded at my door. One black wing whisted: Nevermore. Through shuttered gloom the raven came, And perched above a dying flame. I begged for news of lost Lenore, For one sweet glimpse of days before. Its eyes were coals, its answer sure βNevermore.β And nothing more. The paper turned beneath my hand. The floor dissolved to shifting sand. One chamber died..another stirred. I followed that accursed bird. Turn the page and close the door, Hear the whisper...Nevermore. Through the walls and through the floor, Every tale demands one more. Where the dead and dreaming meet, Hear the heart beneath the beat. Turn the page, descend once more The raven waits beyond the door. An old man slept..his pale eye shone. For seven nights I watched alone. The eighth, I raised my lantern high He woke and gave a strangled cry. I hid him under boards of pine, And told the law that all was fine. But underneath their measured speech, A pounding rose beyond my reach. βEnough!β I screamed. βPull up the floor! His heart is beating evermore!β The carnival burned red and gold, I spoke of wine within the cold. Fortunato followed me Down catacombs where none could see. I chained him fast against the stone, His laughter cracked.. we stood alone. Brick after brick, his pleas grew thin. The bells fell quiet...as I sealed him in. Turn the page and close the door, Hear the whisper.. Nevermore. Where the dead and dreaming meet, Hear the heart beneath the beat. Seven rooms in jeweled light! Prince Prospero had barred the night. Outside, the plague consumed the land. Inside, the dancers joined their hands. The ebony clock began to toll. Each stroke rang through the revelersβ souls. At twelve, a crimson stranger came. No face beneath, no mortal name. The prince fell dead before the throne. The masquerade belonged to Death. I woke where daylight could not dwell, And felt the rim of some black well. They bound me fast beneath a blade Its swinging shadow slowly swayed. Down, down, the polished edge drew near. Each arc divided time from fear. I slipped my bonds... the blade swept past, But heated walls closed in at last. The pit yawned wide beneath my feet A hand reached out before defeat. Beside the kingdom by the sea, The moon still brings her back to me. Though earth may take what hearts adore, The tide returns her name once more. Across a tarn the mansion leaned, Its windows watched, its stones had dreamed. A fissure ran from roof to ground Inside, a brother feared each sound. They laid his sister in a tomb Her footsteps climbed the midnight gloom. The chamber burst.. she crossed the floor. He fell and rose again no more. Then lightning split the house in two The black tarn swallowed all I knew. Turn the page and close the door, Hear the whisper: Nevermore. Where the dead and dreaming meet, Hear the heart beneath the beat. Turn the page, descend once more. The raven waits beyond the door. I closed the book. The storm was gone. I watched the pale approach of dawn. Then from the dark, beyond the door... Nevermore.
