[Verse 1] They smile in the room While the ceiling leaks New paint on the lie Old blood on the keys A file goes missing A hand gets fed And the small-town truth Stays stone cold dead [Pre-Chorus] They trade in favors They trade in names One dirty hand Just washes the same And every promise Gets dressed in gold Till the locks are changed And the story’s sold [Chorus] Not good enough Not good enough (Scratch their backs) To keep it shut Not good enough Not good enough (Keep it quiet) While the papers rot [Verse 2] The judge says “order” With a grin too neat The boss says “family” Then sweeps the street A vote gets counted A door stays closed And every loudmouth Gets bought and sold [Pre-Chorus] They trade in favors They trade in blame One for the money One for the name And every promise Gets dressed in gold Till the locks are changed And the story’s sold [Chorus] Not good enough Not good enough (Scratch their backs) To keep it shut Not good enough Not good enough (Keep it quiet) While the papers rot [Bridge] If you want the truth You’ll have to pry From the ring on their hands And the smoke in their eyes But the wall ain’t forever The cracks get seen And the house of thieves Can’t hold that clean [Final Chorus] Not good enough Not good enough (Scratch their backs) To keep it shut Not good enough Not good enough (Keep it quiet) We’ve had enough We’ve had enough (Scratch their backs) To keep it shut Not good enough Not good enough And now we’re done
