Far from the growing camp, she remained kneeling within the circle she had prepared with meticulous care: black feathers arranged upon the snow, relics resting between lines of frost, dried herbs slowly smoldering beneath the cold wind. Beside her sat Blíðki, motionless as a carved idol, his pale eyes fixed upon the horizon. The cat had not left her side once. Whether by instinct or something older, he seemed to understand that disturbing the ritual would be unthinkable. The Andfuglsjá had progressed far beyond ordinary trance. At first, the ravens had merely been visitors. Now they had become her eyes. Dozens of black silhouettes crossed the white sky above her, their movements weaving together into patterns only she could understand. Through them she perceived distant valleys, frozen ridges and endless plains stretching beneath the pale northern light. Each bird carried fragments of vision, and her mind struggled to hold them all without losing itself. In the distance, the others continued building camp. Torstein had split wood until his hands were raw, though his attention rarely remained on the task for long. Every few minutes his gaze drifted back toward the queen. More than once he had watched her body tremble violently, her breathing becoming irregular as if she were drowning beneath invisible waters. The urge to intervene grew stronger each time. Eventually he took a step forward. Mikell immediately caught his arm. The wanderer said nothing. He simply shook his head. Torstein frowned. "She can barely remain upright." "Which is precisely why she must finish," Mikell replied quietly. Torstein looked unconvinced. "If something happens to her..." "It already is happening," Mikell answered. "The ritual was dangerous before the Age of Runic Twilight. Now that the boundaries between worlds are weakening, it is worse. If you pull her back too early, you may leave part of her mind somewhere she cannot recover from." That was enough to silence him. Nearby, Mikki sat upon a rock, absentmindedly turning a small snowflower between his fingers. "Hmm," the old druid murmured. "People always wish to interrupt miracles halfway through." Nobody was entirely certain whether he was joking. Meanwhile, Skörta continued her search. The ravens carried her farther. Across frozen valleys. Across distant coastlines. Across lands she had never walked. She searched for Helena. For Bruno. For any familiar soul. The effort felt endless. Then, suddenly, she found one. Hours earlier, inside the great hall of the northern village, warmth and conversation had replaced fear. The captives were no longer captives. Helena, Min and Johannes sat around a long wooden table while villagers moved freely around them. Smoke drifted toward the rafters. Children laughed somewhere near the fire pits. Bruno stood before them, speaking with a confidence that seemed almost unfamiliar. "In this village there is a Brúarsjá," he explained. Helena raised an eyebrow. "A what?" Before Bruno could answer, Johannes leaned forward. "A Brúarsjá is among the rarest individuals in existence. They are known as Watchers Between Worlds. While others see forests, mountains or fog, they perceive fractures hidden within reality itself." The hall quieted around them as he continued. "They can sense places where the barriers between Midgard, Asgard and Helheim grow thin. Sometimes they witness movements between realms. Sometimes they hear echoes crossing from one world into another." Bruno nodded. "That's the simplest explanation." He paused briefly before continuing. "Since the fall of Bifröst, their role has become far more important. During the Age of Runic Twilight, Heimdall ceased to stand as the sole guardian between worlds. The great bridge no longer binds reality as it once did. Because of that, people like the Brúarsjá have become invaluable. They watch the fractures that others cannot see." Helena listened carefully. "And you believe this person could help us find Yggdrasil?" "I do." Bruno folded his arms. "The Brúarsjá performs a ritual called Brúarvaka. Through ashes, roots and prolonged trance, they walk a spectral bridge connecting separate realities. They can observe distant realms and follow traces left by gods themselves." "And the cost?" Johannes asked. Bruno's expression darkened. "There is always a cost." He glanced toward the fire. "Every crossing leaves a mark upon the soul. Many eventually struggle to distinguish their own world from the countless others they have witnessed. Some hear voices emerging from Yggdrasil itself. Few return unchanged after looking too deeply." Silence settled briefly over the table. Then Helena asked: "So what's your plan?" Bruno smiled. "Let me speak with him." Min watched her son carefully. There was pride in her eyes now. Not because he had survived. Because he had grown. The uncertain boy who had boarded the ship no longer seemed entirely present. Something greater had begun taking shape. "You've changed," she said softly. Bruno laughed. "I certainly hope so. Nearly freezing to death should teach a person something." Even Helena smiled. "Just don't become unbearable." "I'll try." A short time later, Bruno left to seek the Brúarsjá. The moment he disappeared through the hall doors, Helena turned toward Min and Johannes. "We still have unfinished conversations." Before either could answer, a raven descended from the rafters. It landed gently upon Helena's shoulder. The room fell silent. The bird showed no fear. Slowly, almost instinctively, Helena lifted it into her hands. Then she dropped to one knee. Her eyes lost focus. "Skörta?" she whispered within her thoughts. The raven tilted its head. Once. Twice. Recognition surged through her. The connection was real. "If you can hear me," Helena thought, "meet us at the foot of Yggdrasil in a few days." The raven stared at her for several long seconds. Then it launched itself into the air. The instant it vanished, Helena collapsed. Far away, beneath the frozen sky, Queen Skörta gasped as though she had finally surfaced after drowning. Her body lurched forward. The raven visions shattered. Torstein reached her first. "My queen!" The others hurried across the snow. The Jarl arrived moments later. "Did you find my daughter?" Skörta slowly raised her head. Exhaustion lingered behind her eyes, yet a smile appeared despite it. She looked toward him and spoke with quiet certainty. "Something better." The wind carried her words across the frozen plain. "We found each other." 💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍 "The ravens see what I cannot..." "Every path between worlds demands a price." Skörta... if you hear me... meet us beneath Yggdrasil... Fjarri... Fjarri... Fjarri... Fjarri...
