33. Forty Years upon the Sea | Act V: The Chase and the Silence

V6

[The Scene] Following the Pequod’s refusal to aid the Rachel and Pip’s desperate plea not to be abandoned again, a rare calm settles over the ship. Standing upon the deck in the gentle morning light, Ahab reflects upon forty years spent at sea, the wife he has repeatedly left behind and the child whose life he has scarcely shared. His recent tenderness towards Pip has awakened memories of the family he has neglected in pursuit of his own ambitions. With Starbuck nearby, the captain briefly allows his hardened authority to give way to weariness and regret. For a moment, the obsession that has governed his life seems to loosen its hold, revealing the man beneath the command and offering Starbuck one final opportunity to appeal for a return home. [Verse 1] For forty years I've watched the waters rise, And measured all my days beneath these skies. Each voyage drew me farther from the shore, Yet when I landed, I would sail once more. [Verse 2] My wife has watched the years dissolve like rain, While I have measured distance, loss and pain. I gave her vows, then vanished into foam, And left her with the silence of our home. [Chorus] Forty years upon the sea, what have I gained? A wound, a name, a heart the years have chained. I think of those whose lives I scarcely know, And wonder why I always chose to go. [Verse 3] Each year my child has grown beyond my sight, While I have steered by stars through endless night. My hands have gripped the rail through storm and cold, Yet scarcely know the child I vowed to hold. [Verse 4] The boy who begged me not to leave his side, Has shown me what I long have tried to hide. I held his trembling hand against the night, And saw my absent child within that light. [Chorus] Forty years upon the sea, what have I gained? A wound, a name, a heart the years have chained. I think of those whose lives I scarcely know, And wonder why I always chose to go. [Verse 5] One wounded part of me still seeks the whale, And hears the iron voice that bids me sail. Yet in this morning's unaccustomed peace, I feel that voice within me almost cease. [Verse 6] I turn to Starbuck, with so much to say, And feel the iron certainty give way. The sea lies calm, the morning air is clear, And home I've scarcely known seems suddenly near. [Chorus] Forty years upon the sea, what have I gained? A wound, a name, a heart the years have chained. I think of those whose lives I scarcely know, And wonder why I always chose to go. [Outro] The quiet deck is bathed in morning light, And for one breath the chase fades from my sight. I hold his gaze, but cannot find a word, And leave the question trembling, still unheard.
